Mad Can't Network My Axim!

Help! I installed a Netgear router/AP over the weekend and all is working fine (I can access the internet and email using a Socket wireless CF card). No problem there. I also modified my Axim's I.D. to remove the underscore character that gives MS networks some problems. However, using file explorer as a part of Pocket PC02, and after entering the name of my computer in the open path dialog, I get the message "The network path was not found" and then "Network resource cannot be found as you do not have permission....etc." What, moreover is the network name of my PC (Duh)? Is it the name of the computer? The router? Workgroups? I give up. This shouldn't be that hard....

Run ipconfig /all and it will tell you the hostname/computer name.

Still no luck. Running ipconfig / all brings up a black screen which quickly disappears. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, and the firewall feature is active. Could this be the problem?

You need to go to DOS and then run IPCONFIG /ALL - If you run IPCONFIG from the run menu on the Start menu it will close down as soon as it's done.

Go to Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> Command Prompt

When the black window opens run IPCONFIG / ALL, when you finish, type EXIT to close the window.

Hope that helps...

Thanks for the information. I don't think I have used a DOS prompt in years!! My computer name is listed just as I had entered it into the file search path on the Axim. But according to IP config:

Primary DNS Suffix.......(blank)
Node Type:....unknown
IP Routing Enabled......No
WINS Prox Enabled......No.

Which means my router has not been configured to share files between computers, I believe (geez)....I didn't run Windows XP small network setup wizard, thinking this was not necessary. I will try to configure the router though, unless you have some other suggestions....thanks.

I don't think those settings have anything to do with either your router or file sharing.

I think you are right. But Good News. By playing around with various settings, including running the Home Office Network wizard (but it reported it failed to complete setup) I am now able to access my network on the Axim!! All of my shared folders and files are there!! I'm not sure how this came to be. I just finished viewing my photo albums on the Axim using Resco Picture Viewer!

However, one of my purposes of networking my Axim was to play WMA files on my Axim streamed from my PC. But I just now figured out that the Axim's Windows Media Player loads music files only from local content, not from a network file folder. Is there a way around this? Thanks.

Certainly there is. I remember seeing threads about this, you can even stream live TV on your Axim. Search the forums for the word "streaming".

well you can use resco and map the drive for choppy performance
OR
run some host encoder program
such as a shoutcast server or windows media encoder.
From those you can stream the way you stream from the net

Uhmm I hadn't noticed that Windows Media Player on PPC didn't stream... I stream MP3's from my desktop on my laptop all the time.

I'll search for a program like that and post it here, if someone else know about one, post here too please!!! Thx!!!

Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft on the PC. WMP on the PPC. Configure WME to stream the media and WMP to pickup the stream.

Thanks for the responses. Howard 2k, could you elaborate a bit more on this? Presumably Windows Media Encoder is available from MS and not "built in" on Windows Media Player for Windows XP, Home Edition, version 8.0 or 9.0. How does one cthen configure WMP on the Axim to "pickup" a stream? Thanks.

I found Windows Media Encoder thanks to another post on the forums:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.aspx

Same question though... how do you set-up PPC-WMP to 'pick-up' the stream... :o

From WMP go to Tools, Open URL and enter the URL you are using. It'll probably be http://192.168.1.101:8080 here 101 is your PC's IP and 8080 is the port you use in WMP.

I tried that and it connected... what I couldn't do was to get it to play the files.

I mean, on WME where do I tell it what files to broadcast? Ohh the price of being a newb...

Thanks!
