WLAN Util can't resolve hostnames

Hi,

I am going crazy......

I cannot use Dell WLAN Utility to ping network hostnames...
nothing happens. I can ping hostnames using xvUtil however, so I'm at my wits end.

My X3i is connecting to my Linksys AP no problem.
It gets IP via DHCP, can browse web, can connect to ActiveSync.
Connection stable.

I wouldn't care, but my VB .NET app I'm working on can't resolve hostnames either, and I'm losing my wits trying to find out why.

Anyone come across this before?

Many thanks in advance (fingers crossed)....

This is a bit of a can of worms to deal with. Looking at the Microsoft desktop OS timelines, they've really messed around with the whole name resolution schemes at various times but with and without conforming to documentation. It's not a big deal, but it can cause unexpected results and performance issues sometimes.

For PPC I've seen no decent documentation that shows what the name resolution order is. But a couple of things to check:

Are the hostnames that you're trying to ping local or remote? Are you using just hostnames or FQDNs?

What is the OS on the host and if it's XP, what is the status of it's NetBIOS?

Thx for the reply Howard,

Actually, I got my .NET app working, after playing around with the various network settings ALL morning on the X3i. And truthfully, I'm not sure why it started working. I think setting all the various 'internet / Work' options to Work did the trick.

Dell WLAN Util still can't ping a hostname (ip is okay though).
And it was just local hostnames (don't know what an FQDN is..).
But as long as my app works and I can surf, I'm happy.

Zero configuration my ass!

great news :)

FQDN - Fully Qualified Domain Name, sorry.

howardspc.myisp.com = FQDN
howardspc = not fully qualified domain name.
