Configuring With Another Network

I have an X5 and I'm using a Linksys wcf12 wireless card. I have no problems getting on to the internet with my own network or accessing my other pc's drives. My problem is that when I'm out at my friends or my Dads house and I want to access there network to utilize the internet I can't seem to figure out how to configure my X5 to link to there wireless network.
I'm running PPC 2002. I have it set up as Infrastructure. In my connections properties all three options are set to Work not Internet. I need a step by step on changing SSID name and what ever I need to do to make the connections. My buddy has no issues with his PPC 2003 X3i. I've researched everywhere for the last week. Its driving me nuts.

Help !! Please

There is an option in there driver utility page where you need to match up the:

SSID and WEP configuration. Obviously the exact configuration will depend on how their network is configured.

Do you see their networks under the Site Survey tool?

When I hit survey scan I can see other networks, but when I input there SSID name in my Advanced Configuration it doesn't seem to do anything. The light on my wireless card just flashes, and I can't connect. Is there a certain sequence I need to follow to configure my card and system settings ??

How can you tell if they are using MAC address filtering? I'm running Pocket Warrior or I just use the Linksys scan survey.

Another question I have is that I've set up my wireless card as Infrastructure. Should it be set up as 802.11 Ad hoc ? Because when I do I can't get a connection. I'm running a Microsoft MN-500 router so thats why I set it up as Infrastructure.
