Using the Axim X5 as a Cell Phone...?

Hi all,

I am contemplating (and piecing together) ways in which to make my Axim act as a cheap cell phone. My plan is to use Skype (www.skype.com) on my Axim and then to connect wifi to make calls.

So far:

Install Skype for Pocket PC (WM2003 only): DONE
Get Headset: DONE.
Get Wifi: PENDING.
Get Mic: ?

The question: Will the Axim mic work with Skype? Will my Axim "know" I am using the mic?

If anyone has any advice about this, or using the Axim in this way, pls share it!

Thanks and take care

Skype is a terrific application. If I remember correctly, you don't need to do anything to turn your mic on. Once you connect with another Skype user, you can both just start talking (like in a phone call) since it's full duplex. There are other applications (Microsoft Portrait) that require you to tap on a talk button before you speak, but Skype does not require this.

I believe only wifi is supported because the others are too slow.

I use my X5 in this way.
I turn down the speaker volume so that the mic doesn't pick up any sound from the speaker, otherwise the person at the other end would hear echoing.
Then, after connecting to the wireless network I start Skype, make the call and hold the X5 upside down with the speaker next to my ear - mobile phone style.
It works very well. The only problem I've encountered is with shutting Skype down after I've finished the call. It often hangs the system requiring a soft reset. Logging off properly from Skype seems to help but I've not yet found a reliable way of closing it down.

I hate to correct Gigi, but MS Portrait Ver. 2.2 now supports hands free full duplex VOIP.

Check it out in our prior board discussions:

Hehehe...no problem... I'm glad I was wrong in this case! I will have to see if it works for WM2003SE.
