SMC Barricade 11/22Mbps Wireless Router deal

I just bought the SMC 11/22Mbps Wireless Router last week with a nice rebate included. Router works great (although had to step it down from 22 auto to 11mbps to work with my Ambicom CF card).

SMC 11/22mpbs 802.11b Wireless Router with PCMCIA Card $59
TechDepot.com has the SMC SMC2404WBR Turbo 11/22Mbps Wireless Router along with the SMC SMC2435W PC Card Bundle for $119.95 - $50 rebate - $10 off code: TDEPOT = $59.95 + $8.99 shipping. Search for "U2442034" to find it.

Please note that the bundled card is PC Card Bus and *NOT* a CF card (I'm using it for my work laptop).

Note: mine shipped with older firmware... had to do the upgrade (downloaded from SMC website) to enable MAC address filtering. Got it upgraded, configured and running in less than 10 minutes!

A slight word of warning about SMC. (And this is just my personal experience and thus one opinion.)

I own an older SMC router. (SMC7004WBR, I believe.) Right now, it works fine. But in the beginning there were problems that required a few firmware upgrades. The problem was it seemed to take them forever to acknowledge problems that people were reporting. Then, once the new versions of the hardware came out, firmware for known problems on the older devices slowed that much more.

I don't expect a company to have to support a product for decades, but when the device is only a year or two old and you've got known issues, good companies will typically respond or at least acknowledge your e-mail.

Now, as I said, my wireless router is working fine these days and in the past year, SMC may have improved on their customer services. So I'm not saying that anyone should avoid buying their products. Just relating a little history.

DSLReports has a good SMC forum for people who own or thinking of owning one of their products.
