Question Which WIFI?

I am in the Uk and recently bought the Axim 400. I am well chuffed with it but am now looking at Wifi for it.

I see that Dell.com sell TrueMobile 1180 cards for the Axim but the Uk one does not.

Which card would you guys recommend?

Do all cards stick out at the top for the aerial or do some fit snuggly in the Axim?

Many thanks

Alex

Wifi - MA701

I bought a Netgear MA701 just a few days ago. In 5 minutes, I had it up and running - at least for Internet (I doubt that I'll use more than that). I bought the MA701 because of it's price - ~$40US after rebate. I also bought it because my wireless access point/router is a Netgear product. So far it works great around the house.
Yes, there is a piece that sticks out the top. It is about 1 1/4" wide and sticks out about 1".

I recommend the Socket Communication Low Power WLAN CF card. It has the lowest power consumption out there, has a very small antenna,

I had the LinkSys WCF12, eventually had problems reconnecting, and returned it.

I still have the AmbiCom WL1100C. It works great, but had the same antenna height as the WCF12, uses less power than the WCF12, and it 100% stable on reconnect.

I currently use the Socket Low Power card and it is AWESOME! Indeed, it stays in my Axim 24/7.

Where to buy

http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3357802

I bought mine at Outpost.com. I bought it there because overnight shipping was $7.95 which is about the same as everywhere else. They also have them in stock.

The AmbiCom came from CompUSA ( http://www.compusa.com ) but I happened to walk into one of their stores during a "two day" sale. I picked up the Ambicom WiFi card for $29 after rebate, Ambicom BlueTooth CF card (with included PC Card adapter) for $29 after rebate, and Ambicom BlueTooth USB adapter for $29 after rebate. :D

The AmbiCom WLAN CF card appears to me to be the same as the Pretec card. I am trying to edit the registry/inf file to allow me to use the Pretec driver as they have version 3.0 available for download. If I am unsucessful, I will encourage AmbiCom to dload the OEM version 3 driver and make it available soon.

The Socket Communications CF card was purchased through A Matter of Fax ( http://www.amatteroffax.com ) for $119. They sent out three requests for posting a review on the various sites (BizRate, etc) for which I received $5 each credited back to my credit card. Therefore, $119 - $15 = $104 (if my finger subtraction is correct).

I found the lowest price on the Socket card through http://www.pricewatch.com I think...

Currently, AMOF is offering the Socket card for $125.25 at http://www.amatteroffax.com/Item.asp?INVID=480325 . I think this is a good price. I would buy at this price again.

http://www.bestbuy.com did have the Ambicom at $59 (or maybe $39) regular price at their store a month or so ago. I almost bought one then but chose the LinkSys WCF12 instead (as stated before, eventually had problems with it and returned it!).

Hope this helps.

BTW: I have not been sucessful with using WiFi AP sniffers with the AmbiCom or the Socket. I have not, however, pursued it aggresively yet...

Anybody know where the best place to get them in the UK is? The net is obviously fine. Could not find any cheap cards on dabs.com.

Also what is the actual Dell Truemobile card like. It is not for sale from Dell UK.

Does it fit the Axim snuggly??

Cheers

Alex

I will step aside for those that actually have a TrueMobile 1180...

But first:

From what I saw on the web, the lowest (ie snuggest) WiFi card for the Axim is the Socket Communications card. Also be aware that it shows the lowest power draw specifications of any I have seen on the web. Before this card, I burned through a lot of power on my Ax during normal net usage. The power use difference is dramatic. I would advise aganst dismissal of the power draw specs of each card until they are seriously compared to the Socket card.

At first I did not think it would make that much of a difference... I wish someone had clued me in before I went on my WiFi card journey!

Trying to help, not pester! :)

If I find a decent UK price on the Socket card, I will drop a post here.

Good luck in your hunt!
