Question Connecting to Desktop over Internet

I know that it can be done, but how? I'd like to access shared files while I'm on campus.

Is it via the remote assistance on XP, or is it an IP address thing?

Please help.

Thanks,
Dave

I am not really sure what you want to do with your desktop but here are 3 options (I believe one of them will answer your question)

If you want to remote control your desktop than you can use something like VNC (install the server on your desktop and the client on your PPC - http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html)

if you only need access to files you can do that with an FTP client
(e.g. http://www.noisette-software.com/)

3rd option is to use something like pocketlance (http://www.pocketlance.com/) that will allow to access network resources (e.g. shared folders) from your PPC

HTH,

Arnon

Accessing your desktop over internet uis very very risky, the password protected remotedesktop apps are very easy to crack.

If the only thing you want is that your files are availble over internet I suggest a FTP server like www.serv-u.com , it supports SSL for secure connections, very simple to setup and free for home use!

If your desktop is XP Pro you can also use the Remote Desktop feature of XP Pro and the Terminal Services client that is already on your Axim.

You can use VNC http://realvnc.com, but I wouldn't recommend it. The problem with Remote Assistance is that you need someone on the other to ACCEPT the session. Terminal Service would work if you can get through your firwall at work, if you have one. Have you tried the remote tool Yahoo! is hawking? I would pursue the TS option first.

Mad Uuuuggghhhh!!

I am having NO LUCK with this at all. I'm new to wireless networking, and I'm going crazy trying to config my machines! I can't get PocketLancer to work overer wireless (and it's buggy while in the cradle).

How the hell do I set-up terminal services client? Why can't I find any info on this? the damn thing just sits on my PPC with blank fields like I'm supposed to know exactly how to set it up?

What I want to do:
I would like to access files on my desktop and laptop (I'm able to share files between those two) from my Axim. How do I set-up share files? Also, ideally, I wouldn't mind having access to those files from a remote location (but privacy is an issue).

When I go to file explorer and click on the "share" icon, it asks for a "open path" entry with two backslashes in the field...what is that???

PLEASE HELP!!! I'll print this same post as a new topic in hopes of getting some attention.

that's not true, you can set the VNC server up so i automaticly accepts the incoming connection, I use it to remotely control my server (just in my network, not over internet)

the terminal servicesclient doesn't need any setup, just a terminalserver (XP PRO and 2000 server) and you enter the IP adress of that PC in the window and it connects.

but if you want to do that over internet and you have a royter you have to setup a portmapping to that PC and hope the firewall doesn't block outbund terminaltraffic.

Don't touch the share stuff for usage over internet... that's about asking for ppl to come and have a look (or more)

My advice: www.serv-u.com

Mad I share the confusion

Everyone says you can use the Axim to connect to your desktop over the internet, by using TS or VNC, but there is never a how to or if there is, it isn't anywhere near what I see. Frustrating.
