D-Link DWF-660

The theme lately is 802.11b security? Just line the walls of the room--where your 802.11b router/transmitter is--with lead. Oh, Don't forget the celing. That's what I did.

Just kidding. Ha ha.

Anyway, got a d-link CF card for $40. (US) Had to punch in a static IP address to get it to work with my D-link router, wierd that it couldn't auto detect its namesake, but when I'm on campus it WILL auto the IP from a CISCO transmitter. Wierd.

So, if you got a D-link CF and need some help drop me line, maybe I can help.

Interesting, I've got the exact opposite problem. With 128-bit WEP enabled, my 660W connects just fine to my DI-614+ at home, but I can't connect to the Cisco AP's at work. (I get "Unsupported authentication algorithm" in the AP logs."

Just to throw out my problem with DCF660W....I have the D-Link 614+ router at home, which like Silent Drowning, I had to manually enter static IP/DNS/etc.....Every other computer on the network works fine with DHCP, just not the DCF660W. Weird, eh. But just like him, when I'm on campus, it connects fine to the Cisco APs that are all over the place. Sounds like D-Link need to learn uniformity. :)

Slothdog,

Have you tried to disable WEP when at work? It sounds like either one of two things.

1) They don't have WEP enabled at your workplace.
or
2) They use a different authentication key that you have entered into your Axim.

Just disable WEP in your settings and you'll probably be fine. I have a profile set up for Home and School...makes it just a few simple clicks to switch networks.

Veddy interesting. Do you have WEP enabled on the card and/or the access point? We use 128-bit encryption here at work. If I set my card to not use WEP, it lets me see, but not connect to, the network. If I enable WEP, the AP logs seem to imply that D-Link and Cisco don't agree what WEP means.... hm.

Yes, we've double and triple-checked the WEP key, it's correct. It works fine on my home network and my brother-in-law's network using 128-bit WEP, but those are both D-Link routers....

That is interesting indeed. The only time I have seen that error was when the card's WEP key differed from the AP's WEP key (or when WEP wasn't enabled on the card but it was enabled on the AP).

As for your previous post, slothdog, you don't want to enable WEP on the card unless the router or AP that you're connecting to has WEP enabled. In this case, you'd need to know the encryption key that the AP is looking for and enter it on your card.

Let us know when/if you figure out the problem, just in case it happens to one of us someday. :)

Uninstalled the 2.00 drivers from D-Link's site and installed the Prism chipset drivers (thanks to a kind site member for emailing them to me), and it works great with 128-bit WEP at home *and* at work now. :D

Heh, I had just the opposite happen. I had the Prism drivers on there, and it would work fine at home with WEP, but not at school with the Cisco APs. Had to uninstall and put the 2.00 drivers on there and worked fine with both. Weird. :)

what kind of performance / range do you guys get with your 660s? My range really sucks...don't know what's wrong, I have been running the 2.00 drivers. I am now trying the intersil drivers.

I had problems with my DWF-660 and our Cisco access points at work. I could only get it to work with the 1.x version of the driver or the Intersil reference driver. Although the 2.x version of the driver had nicer features, it did not support Open Authentication that our Cisco's use. The Intersil driver does let you use profiles like the Dlink 2.x version.

Question Unable to get IP address from 614+

I have tried configuring the dcf-660w with every imaginable setting at home - I cannot browse the Internet. I was unable to use the 614's dchp, so I was forced to enter a static IP address. But I was able to only ping the dns ip address, I could not get any name resolution. Dlink support tech suggested to get a new card. I do not think there is anything wrong with the card since it works perfectly at work. But when using Dlink's own 614+ router, I am unable to get it to work. I have no problems using the dwl-120+ usb adapter nor the 810+ ethernet bridge, both work with no problems and are able to get ip addresses from the 614+ --- The problem is only with the 660W not getting its IP address from the 614+. The latest drivers were installed and I have tried it with and without WEP. I am totally stumped.

I had that problem

The way I fixed that problem is by in advanced settings changing the key to shared instead of open and it worked and that error went away. Hopefully that works for you.
