Verizon Solved the Problem

The settings on the phone rate where not correct. It took the Verizon tech a while, but he found the problem.

All is well in "axim-ville" tonight.

Rob,

can u explain what settings where not right and what you had to do to fix it? I'm expecting my "cord" any day now and I also have Verizon with a LG phone. I understood when you connect it to the PDA you will not be required to pay the extra monthly fees; it will just be your minutes that are used. That is what I was told my a Vzn rep, anyway.

;)

Gomatic Cable - Verizon

MissC,

You must at least have the "Moblie Web" ($5 per month)
access on your phone.
If you don't call Verizon and they will add it and up date your
phone. This should be all you need...normally. Then follow the
instructions on the Gomatic site.

If you have difficulty call Verizon mobile web tech support
and ask then to check your "phone rate". He will also check your
software settings etc. Verizon needs to do this, as some of the things I checked required "codes" given to me by Verizon tech support.

You could call and ask them to check before you get your cables, just be sure they understand that you will be using your cell phone as a modem to a Axim Pocket PC 2002.

Rob,

Thanks for the help. Still waiting on the cable though-unless it came today and is still on the porch! I ordered it last weekend so I thought it would be here by now. I have the Mobile Web free for 3 months...then I guess I'll have to pay the extra $5 a month

Worried Similar problems with gomatic and verizon setup

Anyone know what the number is to verizon mobile web tech support??? Got the VX 4400 LG Cell phone, the gomatic cable, and the dell all up and running however I get the following error when dialing....

"Trouble connecting...

There is no modem at the number dialed. Verify the phone number and then try again..."

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated..

You dont need mobile web to connect to the internet with Verizon using the Gomadic Cable. I have the Kyocera 3035 (which can use mobile web - but I dont have it). On the Connection Settings Use YOUR area code in the area code field (this makes it a local call) and the #777 goes in the phone number field. It connects at 14.4 - not fast but it works. And I am not paying for Mobile Web. :D

I followed the suggestions in this thread, the Gomadic instructions and other threads here & I still can't make this work.

My settings are:

Hayes Compatible on com1
19200 Baud rate
#777 for phone number
qnc/qnc for uid/password

My phone says it connects, but then it promptly hangs up.

See post by myself above. Sounds like my problem with the "phone rate".

Yanks, Rob. I just ordered Mobile Web to see if that makes a difference. Any idea how I can tell when it is activiated? I thought I'd wait until then to call Verizon about other settings. In the meantime I might experiment with different (slower) data rates & see what happens.

I had the exact situation the JSnoody described happened to me. Everything was set up as designed, but I would make the call and it would immediately hangup.

BTW, I have a Motorola T720 with Verizon.

I called Verizon Mobile Internet Tech support (I was passed around a little bit, so I don't have a direct #) and he had me change a setting on my phone.

I performed the following steps (Don't look at the screen on your phone - just type away)

Menu073887*
It brings you to a Enter Security Code Prompt
type in

000000

(six zeros) then click OK

Go to Data Rates then click Select

Change the Data Rate from 153.6 to 14.4

then back out and try it. -- I was then able to connect and stay connected.

I'm actually surprised at the speed it brings up pages. Not as quick as when I'm using my wireless card - but not bad. I'll definitely use it.

JayC,

The Verizon tech talked me through the steps you describe and I can now connect. My phone still tends to drop the connection frequently. It will usually hold long enough to send & receive email, but only once was I able to perform an Avant Go modem sync.

I'm going to try connecting from my notebook, where I may have a bit more visibility of what's going on. If nothing else, results consistent with what I'm experiencing with my Axim will indicate a phone/Network problem and shift suspicions from my Axim configuration.

Anyone else got this to work? I will be getting my cable soon for my LG and don't want to spend money if I don't have to. Also (may be a very stupid question) is it not possible to connect to the phone and just dial a normal ISP?

I've used it for my laptop too - was able to VPN into work and preform necessary IT stuff I need to due - and again, speed was not bad. I wouldn't want it as my main way of connecting - but if I need to connect, it is a workable option.

BTW, I never mentioned. I do have the mobile web option with verizon, but I was told I don't need it to connect my Ax to the internet - only my plan minutes are used according to time of day. No MB charge or anything, just minutes. This is also not Verizons xPress Network -- that is an additional cost but gives you better bandwidth. I'm actually happy with the current speed, especially for what I'm using it for, so that's not worth the extra $25 or so a month.

As for using your own ISP - I wouldn't see why not. But - it is a new technology, so I would check with your ISP, as you may have to dial a different number to get a server that can handle the data transferred by your phone.
