Mad i'm just about to shoot myself

hi everybody,

today it is the first day that I got to play with my new Axim 30H. Everything was going quite smooth, I got really impressed and amazed by its possibilities, installed some software and played... until I wanted to go online with the WiFi.
I have a broadband conn to my PC (ADSL) and could not spend too much, therefore I just bought a WiFi PCI card to use it in the ad-hoc mode. I got DLink DWL-510, installed it... and that was the end of my joy

Those things just do not want to cooperate or I am so hopeless... :rolling:

I can briefly report you my situation:

At the PC side: I turned on the conn sharing on my regular net card and set a "ad-hoc" network on my WiFi card. I tried to use the dynamic IP and also set the IP to 192.168.0.1 and so on. The problem is that because of the ADSL broadband I am getting the dynamic "outside" IP everytime and the DNS through DHCP - so even when I set the IP on the WiFi card to 192.168... I still could not figure out what to do with its DNS...

At the Axim side: the dell wlan utility detects "peer to peer" network, but keep scanning on... I set the network as my default (as to use for Internet as well), the Odysey client can not detect the network at all. I tried to use different settings here as well (dynamic IP, set the IP to 192.168.0.2, etc)

And now what is happening: both the PC and PPC connect from time to time - I mean they say connected and show signal strength, than they go off again and on and off (the cycle is about 20 sec. up to 1 min.) I can not ping the PC or browse the web or shared folders...

Well, I decided to give up now and go to bed... maybe you, guys would have some better ideas what to do ?

Sorry if the post seems too confusing, but I have been fighting with it and reading the FAQs for last 6 hours...

Best of All and Good Night

I think you HAVE to use a static IP address... set the PC up to 192.168.0.1, net mask of 255.255.255.0 and the Axim as 192.168.0.2 net mask 255.255.255.0

For the DNS, you have to get the DNS addresses from your ISP (ADSL) connection and type them in on the Axim. Don't worry about the DNS settings for your WIFI card on the computer because you won't be using that connection for domain name resolution anyway.

Last, you may have to configure a default gateway on the Axim... I believe that would be the address of the PC WIFI card (192.168.0.1 if you use my suggestion above)

To browse network shares, you will need to use \\192.168.0.1\shared_folder_name to access PC folders on the Axim...

Good Luck :approve:
(Oh, yeah, :exc: PUT THE GUN DOWN)

yeah I trei to do as you suggest above, but still no luck...

I set the IP on the WLAN card to 192.168.0.1, net mask of 255.255.255.0
I set on the Axim? IP: 192.168.0.2, net mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway to 192.168.0.1 and still nothing....
Do you have any idea how to set the default gateway at the WLAN card?
And also, since the my main outside DNS kepp changing because of DHCP, what I should I actually set as the DNS value on the Axim?

Oh man, I am near to give up and throw all the stuff away

And BTW [QUOTE (Oh, yeah, PUT THE GUN DOWN)
] - I do not even have a gun yet

The problem may be the the IP you've assigned to the PC's WiFi. ICS uses 192 168.0.1 for the virtual server it uses for the sharing. By assigning that number to the adapter, you have an immediate IP violation. Either let ICS assign dynamic IPs or use 192 168.0.2 for the PC adapter and 192 168.0.3 for the PPC.

Also, for the DNS numbers if your PC is directly connected to the DLS modem, open a DOS window on your PC (with WinXP, type cmd in the Run... field). Then, type ipconfig/all

The DNS will be included in the list.

Good point... then does he need to use 192.168.0.1 as the default gateway (since that is what ICS sets up for the virtual server)?

Also, maad11, you may want to open a command prompt and use:
route print
to display the routing table. My concern is that the routing table may be directing internet traffic to the wifi card on the PC instead of to the ADSL connection. Can you still browse the web on the PC since you installed the wifi card?

Yes, 192.168.0.1 is the default Gateway. It should also work as the DNS if the system is working properly but using the DNS from his ISP should also work.

hey guys, I am back at my desktop

Once again thanks everybody for the support :approve:
I uninstalled the PCI WLAN card and installed it again, run th ipconfig/all and it started working.
I have a full acces from my Axim to Internet right now :)

Unfortunately, I can nnot ping my PC from my Axim - I try to ping 192.168.0.1 and it is not working.

I also can not sync via WiFi, the active sync at the PC says connected (Guest) and on the Axim it says: connecting... And have no idea how to explore my PC folders...
Once again big thanks :approve: (you guys are incredible) and still waiting for further advice

Best of All

okay, another part of news from the war zone :)
I disabled the firewall and everything started to work
Now, the only thing left to do is to set up the firewall to have it protecting me from outside attacks and allow me to use my network. Anybody has any experience with Symantec's Internet Security? As always, I will appreciate your assistance. :approve:
