In a Spring Issue of PC Mobile the LG's were rated poorly and were considered troublesome to use as well as cheaply made. I avoided the LG's and opted for a newer Motorola. I have also had good succes with Nokia's. Sony Erickson's can be of good quality for the higher end $ phones.

I have a related question. After some diffiuclty, I am now able to connect to the internet via GPRS using my Blutooth Phone and Dell Axim X3i with Socket Bluetooth SD card . However, I am also interested in connecting via GSM/CSD. I think the settings need to be different. I have a phone number to be dialed and have read that the extra string dialing command needs to be different from the GPRS settings. Anyone with any information?

fyi, the 'z' is reset, it comes from the older landline modem command set.

I have a Raz3 with Cingular and they don't allow us to use our phone as a modem. So I'd have to purchase their data plan. Which I won't

Hello Chaps-a curious related problem here. I have just got a Samsung D500 (kiiler phone, apart from not being able to turn off all the moronic tones) replacing my Siemens SL55 both on O2. The Siemens didn't have Bluetooth, so I had set my Axim X30 up to access the internet via GSM and a free dial-up ISP using infra-red. The whizz-bang Samsung has bluetooth, so I thought that I'd switch to that, so I set up a bluetooth GSM connection with exactly the same details as the infra-red connection. The phone is paired with the Axim and I have successfully sent contacts data to it from the Axim via bluetooth.
When PIE tries to access the internet, I get a connection, but no transfer of data, as if the ISP server is not receiving the password and so no connection to the internet and I get the message "The page you are looking for cannot be found".

Having read Martin's brilliant guide to setting up a GPRS connection, I thought that this sounded like a wizard wheeze (also a lot cheaper than a GSM timed connection)and that maybe this would circumvent my problem. Set up all worked, I liaised with the O2 data guys, who have been pretty helpful to date, the Axim connects to the phone via bluetooth, the GPRS icon appears to indicate a connection-AND same result-same message on the PIE.

I'm still in contact with the O2 guys, so if they are able to resolve the issue, I'll post an answer.

By the way, the old infrared/GSM settings with the dialup ISP still work with the D500.

Suggestions/solutions/much appreciated.

MY

PS
Just to check, I have just set up a GPRS connection using Martin's instructions, using the infrared connection, not bluetooth and the exact same settings as for the Bluetooth connection and with this there is no problem accessing the internet. Aaaagh!

Sorry to hear your problems. It's difficult to see what could be going wrong. A couple of thoughts are:

1) Make very sure o2 have enabled GPRS on your account (if you were using GSM dialling before and have switched, it may not have taken effect on your account (assuming you asked for it). Did they send you a text message which you read, deleted, turned your phone off and back on again? Which service provider are you with (e.g. Carphone Warehouse - CPW 02, etc)?

2) There are a couple of phones out today (the Sony Ericsson S710i being one example) that do not actually have the ability to connect over GPRS via bluetooth. The function has simply been disabled. Unfortunately I don't know whether this is the case with the D500. What I would suggest is possibly getting a friend or colleague's phone and trying to set up a GPRS connection with theirs, and see if it works. You might also try taking the D500's battery out when the phone is still on, which resets the bluetooth cache, waiting 30 seconds, putting it back in and turning it on and trying to connect then.

3) Make very sure you have the correct dial-string command; any mistakes in this could cause failure.

Hope some of this helps. Let me know how it goes. Incidentally, I come from Folkestone, which isn't a million miles from Tonbridge!

Hi Martin, thanks for the comments:

1) Am definitely getting a working GPRS connection using infra-red. The phone uses GPRS for its own browser. The phone was supplied by O2 online.
2) Also am getting a working GSM connection using infra-red.
3) Just to check the dial string command I copied and pasted the working dial-string command from the working infrared GPRS connection to the instructions for my Bluetooth GPRS connection. Same problem "the page you are looking for cannot be found" message from PIE.

Will see if I can find a friend with a Bluetooth O2 phone to see whether it's a Dell or a Samsung problem.

O2 data support still struggling.

MY

O2 have now given up. They think that the bluetooth platform on the D500 might be "unstable". I have e-mailed Samsung user support for help.

Mad Samsung's user support response

My question to Samsung:
I have attempted, with O2's data suport function, to set up a bluetooth connection to allow my PDA to use my D500 as a modem to access the internet via GPRS.

The settings given me by O2 work for an infrared connection, but the same settings put in for the bluetooth connection produce the message on my browser "the page you are looking for cannot be found", although the bluetooth icon on the phone flashes red, showing that communication between the phone and the PDA is taking place and the GPRS icon appears, indicating that there is a GPRS connection.

Equally if I try to make a GSM connection via bluetooth, the phone dials up the ISP, connects with it, but the "the page you are looking for cannot be found" message appears on the browser. If I use the same settings on my infrared connection, the PDA is able to browse on the internet via the GSM connection.

The PDA is properly paired with the D500 by bluetooth and I have sent contact data from the phone to the PDA and from the PDA to the phone by bluetooth.

Is this a fault common to all D500s, or is it just my phone that is faulty?

Samsung's response:

"With reference to your query regarding connecting the D500 to your PDA,
we are unable to provide with assistance as Samsung does not support the
connection of phones to PDA devices.

------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this has been of some assistance to you.If you do have any
further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards
James"

Thank you, Samsung. Anybody any bright ideas out there?

Mel

PS After a certain amount of argy-bargy, O2 has agreed that they will have the phone back. On offer instead are the Motorola V3 and the Nokia 3230, 6822 and 6230i.

Just adding my story regarding a Treo650 - so people can pick it up in a search.

I am on Orange in the UK and just couldn't get my X30 to connect vie bluetooth DUN.

I tried all the different connection strings and permutations, so I thought, with no success.

What finally worked for me was simple!

I made sure that the default network connection was selected on the Treo650 in Preferences - the first one on the dropdown list "Orange Internet"

I set the phone number on the Axim to dial *99***1# (as I wanted to use the 1st one on the list!)

In the advanced tab on the final connection settings page I selected the baud rate to be 57,600

And - I LEFT THE CONNECTION STRING BLANK!

Anything else in here means no dice.

Click click click, GPRS comes up on the Treo, you're online.

Can this be done via a Blackberry?

I have a 7290 which I can browse the internet with. Can I use it as a modem/connection to the internet? Has anyone tried this with a RIM device?

Hey this is my setup and I get some odd results, I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I get the GPRS connection set up and the timer goes on the phone and the PDA says all is well

But! When I try and use PIE I get nothing, just sits there waiting to load pages.

Now my laptop can use the phone as a modem and the X50v can use wifi to the internet. But I cant get them to work together!!

Any Ideas

I have 1500 minute plan and never use all my minutes sooo.....
