Over the last few weeks I've seen quite a few members that needed help connecting their bluetooth-enabled phone to their Axim so they could use it as a modem (most commonly via GPRS). People have had trouble getting the two to talk to each other, and the solution to their the problem is sometimes that they need to add a "new modem connection" before pairing the devices, etc. This enables you to take advantage of the extra dial-string commands, and also means you don't have to input any of the data again. Some networks, like mine, won't allow you to gain access without these extra settings. So, without further ado, I thought I'd just run through the steps to create the new connection for your cell phone:
1. Turn Bluetooth on.
2. Go to Start - Settings - Connections.
3. Tap on "Add a new modem connection."
4. Choose a name for this connection, e.g. "GPRS Aximsite"
5. Under "Select a modem", use the drop-down menu to select "Bluetooth Dialup Modem".
6. Click next.
7. Enter the number you wish to dial; for GPRS, the number is almost always *99#:
8. Click next.
9. Depending upon your network, either fill in username and password or leave them blank. Most networks prefer you to leave them blank/
10. Tap on the "Advanced" Tab.
11. Change baud rate to "57600".
12. Uncheck "wait for dial tone before dialing."
13. IMPORTANT. Input your networks extra dial-string command. For instance, my network is Orange and I would input: +cgdcont=5,"IP","orangeinternet" . Check with your network for your settings. You could also see if your network's settings have been posted in our GPRS Settings Thread.
14. Click OK in the top right hand corner.
15. Click "Finish".
You're now ready to pair your bluetooth phone with your Axim. See Whitelyt's excellent guide here to find out how to do that. When you get to the screen "Select a connection to use", instead of tapping "new conection", you should see "GPRS Aximsite" (or whatever you chose as a name). Hold the stylus down on that, and tap connect.
That should be it! I posted this because more and more networks are requiring the dial-string command to be included before you connect to their GPRS network, plus it saves you having to input the data the next time you need to connect. So for all of you experiencing difficulty connecting your phone to your Axim via BT to be used a modem, try this out and hopefully it should work.
Cheers all.

Well, usually GPRS can work at around the 57600 level; the 19200 is more of a WAP speed (i.e. slow, dial-up). It will still work, but I'm not sure if you'll be limiting its optimum performance by selecting a low baud rate. I'm easily confused! Maybe give it a whirl on the higher baud rate setting and see if you notice a difference?

Definitely will give it a try. Actually, I am supposed to be on EDGE so hopefully this will really help!
I have the connection up so it works...I can send and recieve email but cannot access the internet or AIM for that matter. I neve had this problem with my HP2210 a month ago. It's very strange. It almost seems like a port needs to be opened up or something but i've never had to do this. I can't for the life of me figure out why it is happening. Both of my setting are for bluetooth in the connections configuration window.

Did you make sure your connection settings are set to "Work" and NOT "Internet"?
Wow this is a great post becuase I was just going to search for this type of info. Does anyone have any preference on cell phone carriers? I want one that is unlimited usage and fast as possible. It the cell connection faster then reg. dialup?
im new here, but I just wanted to drop a big thanks. I just ordered an X30HI, and I spend about 90 minutes each way on the train to work. I know that I have 802.11b for a good 30 mins of that, but I was wondering what other options I would have. I do have a BlueTooth/GPRS phone, so this sounds like a pretty cool idea to me.

GIGi,
I don't believe there are any options to change this. Under the settings window where it says a connection that connects to the internet uses "MY ISP" and the connection that connects to my work network uses "work" are not avaialable with Bluetooth. Those are for WiFi....at least so i thought. Both of those options for me are set to bluetooth. Is this wrong? Did you have any luck getting yours to work to access the net and download email without both setting be changed to "bluetooth"?

I appreciate your help.
Oops, yes, you are correct. I don't know what I was thinking! And yes, your settings match what I currently have so I don't think that is the problem. I only access the Internet and use IM via BT so I cannot offer any insight about checking email. Sorry.
