Help with a D-Link 614+ and Axim

Ok I have a D-Link 614+ and I need some help.

I can access my lan just fine, I.E. I can sync with my desktop. However, I cannot access the internet. I definetly have a good link or I couldn't access the desktop via activesync.

Any ideas as to the 614+ itself as to what setting I might need to add in order to access the net directly over my 614+ ?

I really think my problem is some type of DNS issue. Help plz...

Well I just purchased the same router yesterday. I have not set up active sync as I am using just for an internet connection. However I am questioning the range on the dlink myself.

When you go into the config of the dlink is it being assigned a IP from your isp? I guess you could also tell by if you are getting on the net from your destop computer.

If you think it is a config issue on your axim. Which wireless CF card do you have?

After 3 days of fussing I think I have it. Range on the router is good. I am using an ambicom card and it is getting better results than my dlink 660w was.

Here are my settings on the axim.

(under settings connections)

Work Settings (modified with proxy settings connect to the internet)

Work Settings (modified with proxy settings connect to the internet)

Work

You may also need to download pocket hosts.

http://www.zimac.de/cestuff.htm

The most important settings here will be the name of the desktop you are syncing too and its ip on your lan. I also put a shortcut to this program in my windows/startup folder so it launches on a soft reset.

I could not get the card to work well with assigning dhcp turned on in the router. So I assigned the Axim an IP that exists within the range the router assigns (it assigns in sequence starting with the lowest so unless you have 50 computers you could just pick something like 192.168.0.150

I also manually entered the following information into the axims ambicom ip config screen.

IP address : 192.168.0.XXX (XXX being the ip you pick)
Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 (this is your router)
Default gateway : 192.168.0.1 (this is your router)
DNS : 192.168.0.1 (this is your router)
WIN : XX.XX.XX.XX (this is blank on most ISP's)

I also enabled WEP. I am stingy and don't want to share my bandwidth. :-)

You should also get the following two programs

http://www.cam.com/vxutil.html

http://www.cam.com/vxipconfig.html

the DNS audit in vxutil allowed me to scan my ISP for the proper DNS IP. Simply put in a start address (SAddr) and an end address (EAddr) and hit audit. For instance mine was as follows. (Yours will be different. You can always call your ISP and ask them for the DNS server.)

SAddr 24.159.0.0
EAddr 24.159.0.50

So to sum up the ambicom settings here it goes... (assumes your router is correctly configured)

1.Open ambicom config utility under programs.

2.Goto AP browser tab hit rescan. It should locate your network.

3.Goto the configuration tab.

4. Hit the drop down under Network SSID and select your network.

5. For the DLink 614+ I chose the following settings on this screen

network mode : infrastructure
network SSID : (your wifi network name)
link rate : fully auto
channel : (should set itself but check that it matches your router channel you chose)
power management : off

Advanced
Fragmentation threshold 2346
RTS threshold 2432
preamble mode long tx

I then hit IP config and entered my data as described.

Then I went to the security tab and entered my WEP encryption information. Then lastly I went to the perfomance tab so I could confirm my connection to the router.

****************************************

In my router I did the following.

I ran the wizard and chose not to clone my mac address. For this to work I had to reset my modem and call my ISP tech support number and have them release it on their end as well.

I chose my WEP and my new password.

I then went to the Home tab then to the WAN tab and entered my primary DNS for my ISP 24.159.0.XX (yours will vary as described above)

Dynamic IP address was checked on this screen as well.

I then went to the advanced tab. Then the performance sub tab.

In here I changed the following to match the ambicom config utility.

Beacon 100
RTS threshold 2432
Fragmentation 2346
DTIM 3
Basic Rates were at 1-2mbps
TX Rates were set to 1-2 5.5 11
Preamble was set to Long Preamble
Authentication set to AUTO
SSID broadcast set to enabled
Antenna to 100%
4x mode disabled (this only works with DLink cards and even then only with certain ones, the Dlink 660w is not 4x compatible)

I then applied those settings.

This was all that was necessary and this setup is working well for me.

OH and don't forget to goto tools tab then system tab to save your config so its easy to reset once you get it going.
