Wifi connection problems

Hi I'm a new axim ower and I'm trying to set up my wireless connection. I have a linksys router (wrt54g), at home but I am presently only using the wired ports.
Now I've disabled the wep security, set it to B only, broadcast ssid. When I turn on the axim wireless I see a "default" connection. I'm presuming it's mine (How do a assign a name to my router so it would not say default connection, it would give the name i assigned it)
The connection is poor all the time and the connection very slow but it connects. I've tried a soft reset but it did not help. I've tried the tutorial link and that did not help either.
On the axim I choosing the "axim 5 adapter"
In your tutorial it says try a long paramble (name???) can some please explain that to me. I think that may be the key to being successful.

The combination of being new to wireless and the Axim at it same time is frustrating. I would appreciate all the help/suggestions.
Thank You.

The preamble should only matter when you are using WEP, so leave security off for now and that won't be an issue.

Actually, the 'default' network probably isn't yours. Linksys uses 'Linksys' as the default SSID. To change the SSID, go into the router setup utility. The place to enter a new name is on the first page - a box next to 'SSID.' It's the same page where you set the mode to B only. You might want to try changing the wireless channel. It may be whoever has the 'default' router is on the same channel and causing interference.

Once you've change the SSID and channel, save the settings and then start up wireless on your Axim. It should just find the network with your new name and ask if you want to connect.

That did not work. I see "Hidden" with a no enty sign. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I already had a name for the SSID before.

Thanks.
EDIT When you put wire on, is it suppossed to be steady green or a flashing when it connects. Mine flashes when I connect previously but it was "poor"

The very basic concenpt behind pre-amble is that when a frame is passing from one machine to another it can be hard for a particular machine to see where a frame starts. There would typically be a steady stream of data over the network so the idea was to use a pattern that would signify "start of frame coming up". The stations see the pattern and know when to expect the start of the frame.

It also plays a part of collision avoidance/detection.

Whether WEP was enabled or not, pre-amble would still be relevant. Ironically the pre-amble actually doesn't change regardless of of WEP/WPA or any other encryption.

The difference between long and short pre-amble is that as part of the original specifications for 802.11 (there was as standard called 802.11 which preceeded 802.11b/a/g/n etc) a long string (pre-amble) was used. To increase performance, in 802.11b they allowed the option of a short preamble. Less "bits" wasted travelling over the network.

There are probably some devices that cannot use short pre-amble, but there can't be many.

The best approach is to set them all to short or set them all to long.

The challenge is that you cannot always do that. My 4150 for example has a registry key to enable me to change it, but through the GUI I have no capability.

Menthol> You should check the documentation with the router and ensure that the wireless is actually turned on. If you're not seeing it but it DOES have an SSID then maybe it's not active.

I'm beginning to think it's not active, beacuse it should have said the name it was set at or Linksys. I'll see how to check that later today. Pre-amble? where do I set that?

Thanks.

For now, leave it (pre-amble) alone :)

Ok, I'm almost there. I reset my router and can find the connection with my SSID. It is good but when I open the browser I'm getting " In order to connect to the internet you will need to configure a proxy." Two tab availabe dismiss or settings. What do I do now? After I go to setting what do I do?
Remember I'm new to this, layman terms please.
Thanks.

Go into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network."

OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.
