Depends on how it is set up. Some require that you login, etc. Also, you do not just "fire up PIE", you fire up wifi and THEN PIE, but I'm sure that's what you meant... ;)
I can't tell that it makes any difference which I "fire up" 1st! It works the same either way for me. Might depend on settings?
Did you know that freedomlink is free if you are a sbc dsl customer atleast up until may then it only $1.99 a month
those McDonalds/wayport are part of freedomlink. If you are a sbc customer just put in you member id and pass under the roaming area and walla free surfin... woo!! I do it all the time

I posted this message a month or so ago, but not in the "wireless" category - I put together a small file (152k) that lists some wifi freespots in each state. You can copy the file to your Axim, and if you have a reader program like uBook, it will let you look at the files without even unzipping the main file. The lists are in .TXT format, so you should have no problems viewing them. The names and addresses on the list are courtesy of http://www.wififreespot.com/ so please visit their site if you need more info.
Here's the link to the file: http://home.att.net/~patricw/wifi_freespots.zip Hope this is helpful!
I had an odd experinece with WIFI the other day and could do with some advice (I am possibly the world's worst when it comes to anything involving a network!)cos I obviously didn't have it set up right. I was in Starbucks (UK) and switched on WIFI and Starbucks had no WIFI but my Ax picked up a nearby network that was open and it and my AX started to talk to each other; at this point I felt left out:)
So for the sake of curiosity I opened PIE and typed in the address for google and nothing? yet I was still connected to the network - I know I shouldn't piggyback on someone elses network but all I literally want to do was see if I could open a web page (never done it before) over WIFI. The only setting it asked me to choose was "work" or the "internet" for the connexion type, I opted for "internet"
I would be grateful for some advice on how to set this up correctly when using an ad hoc connexion, I have WM2003SE and a wireless box at home that it would ocassionally be nice to use, when I don't fell like dragging the laptop out (it just set itself up without asking me to anything - which was cool I just wish the Ax was that easy.
If you have to set up the connection it is probably not a free hotspot. Why would a free hotspot have a setup? Then you would have to be around to explain how to set it up. It might not even be a hotspot just somebody elses wifi device.

I have no idea - I have seen places advertising free and paid for WIFI and offering instructions for setup, but what I was asking is how to setup the Axim to connect to a WIFI network - is it automatic or is it something you have to configure and choose options etc.
I never said it was free I said it was "open" as in apparently unfirewalled and my Axim was talking to it I just couldn't understand why I was unable to see the internet when I could see WIFI traffic on the system monitor. Although having said that it you may be right and it may of been a free (and I just didn't realise - being the network guru that I am ) WIFI as I was in part of a shopping centre.
It was definitely a business (the name made that obvious) and not a nearby laptop (though I take your point that it could of quite easily been a nearby device).
And before anyone takes exception and tells me I shouldn't be trying to illegally access a network connexion that is not mine or freely provided. I don't approve of accessing other peoples networks without their permission I simply got curious about how you make ad hoc connexions and had I understood how you make a connexion with an Axim and it had been successful I fully intended to let the company know, and at that point would of been told if it was free or otherwise.
So to get back to my original question how do you make a WIFI connexion that will let you access the internet?
First of all do you have wifi set up at all? I have wifi set up at home. When I am out I try to connect by turning on wifi and waiting for it to connect. If it does so automatically then I am in. If not I turn it off and go.
If you do not have wifi set up already go to wifi.aximsite.com and learn how.
I don't use wep at home or any proxy or other foolishness so it is easy. Those things may make it necessary to change some settings to connect. If a site requires those they would have to tell you what those settings are. If you do use those things then you may have to clean them out to use a hot spot.

Does that help?
Yes - thanks it makes things clearer, if it connects automatically then all well and good othherwise like you I think I shall leave it; I think I must of connected just not chosen the right option I understand from a tutorial I read that I should of chosen "work" not "internet".
