I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to stream video off of a computer and straight onto a my Axim without having to copy the video files to the device. I have tried to "Open Path" to the shared doc's folder on my computer to no avail. I don't know if there is a special way that you have to access network resources or what. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Note: This is over a WIFI network so that I can watch video anyware in my house.
You could do this a couple of ways.
1. Setup a VPN
2. Download freeware program like net use or Net Runner.
In both cases you will have to share the files on your pc.
No need for a VPN and no need to share files. You COULD use Net Use but that's not technically streaming.
Windows Media Encoder (free from MS) will allow you to generate a video or audio stream which you can then pick up from a PDA or other suitable client.

I was wondering if you have any sites that i can go to to educate me on this area. I have been "tinkering" with the settings when i was trying to set up wireless activesync. (by the way, i really don't know how the hell i did it!) What I would like to do is stream music over my wifi and possibly video, but I don't understand how they are using beta picards betaplayer (WOW wonderful product)? or any other program etc. is there any site that can give me a knowledge base to draw on in this area about settings for vpn, odysey client, ssid etc etc I am not that wirelessly technically savy, but am eager to learn as much as i can. i found a product that i am going to try from this site through handango called "Rudeo Control". I haven't set it up yet because knowing me it will take several weeks, but i am determined to do this. Please help me here good axim friends. this site has taken up most of my time in learning great things that i can do with my x50v. Thanks to all. Dan ps sorry so long.
Resco file explorer + Betaplayer makes it work for me.
I can play mpeg movies on my x50v using BetaPlayer (opening the file on a network mounted folder on my Desktop PC), but the playback pauses about every 10 secs to seemingly load data down to the x50v before playing for another 10 secs.
Here is a reprint of using windows media encoder for streaming. Can use video input, a file (movie), etc. Enjoy! It works good.

HOW TO Watch TV on your Axim, WiFi style! Look mom, no wires. Some people know about this and have been using it for awhile, but I've found so many people that didn't know.
All you need is a PC with a TV/capture card, an Axim (or other PDA) and a wireless connection. All the software is FREE.
Here are the details:
1) For starters you need to download Windows media encoder 9 and the one for windows media encoder 8 utility right below on the same page at Microsoft Encoders from Pulldown menu link
2) Install 9 then 8 utility.
3) Now once everything is installed open up Windows media encoder, and a wizard will pop up. Choose CUSTOM SESSION
4) first box you will pick your devices by clicking the configure boxes,(this varries from system to system, TV card and Sound card) then click apply.
5) Next tab COMPRESSION under Destination , choose Pocket Pc, skip down to Audio and choose Voice Quality audio CBR
6) now click the Edit button up by the Destination part and make sure you see WM audio 9 and WM video V8. Now click OK then Apply.
7) All changes now in place You should have Video and Sound. Now what you need to do is click the Start Encoding button at the top.
8) To beem it to your PDA you will need the LAN address or Internet address off of the Connections tab below the video window. Just open up WMP on your AX and choose tools , then open URL type in the address that you got from WM encoder.

A server creates a steady flow of traffic that is read an processed by a recipient application.
Internet radio is a good example. The server creates one of more consistent streams of data and clients subscribe to the stream.
Net Runner just does a big information grab and hopes for the best. Most of the time it works great too. But it's not really streaming, it's just opening the file over the network.

I do not agree with you 100%. When I am watching a video on my handheld that resides on my computer it downloads only a portion of the video in a buffer and the video starts to play (Streaming). The video is not being completely downloaded onto the handheld and then played. All that Net Runner is doing is making the network connection.
Streaming is watching a file on another device without copying it to the device you are watching it on. It doesn't matter if it's over the internet, network, bluetooth or whatever.
It's one of those terms that is being "cheapened" through incorrect use, but opening a file over the network (net runner) and generating the TCP/UDP stream for client connections are fundamentally different.
Although net runner does allow you to view part of the file as it comes down you are not generating and subscribing to a stream.

I have never heard of the Windows Media Encoder before now. I have it set up and running on my Desktop and after some tinkering (It seems that in order to receive the stream you need to set the WIFI connection to "Work" otherwise I got an error about not being able to connect to the proxy) I finaly got a stream of video to come over to the Axim. This program looks like it might have other great aplications in situations such as a closed circut television or similar situation. Thanks for informing me of a great app that I hope to use often in the future.
Arhur, Did Media Encorder come in that XP Plus add on pack with Microsoft Snyc and Go. I believe it is only $19.95. There is a lot of streaming content on the web, which I doubt is larger than our VGA screens. It seems crazy that I can't seem to get to most of them because of the limitations of the 2003SE IE program. Microsoft's own Xbox.com web site for instance has tons of great streaming video of new or upcomming video games. I would also like to see my comcast.net news reports as well as MSNBC. The Pocket PC specific sites seem to be severely "dumbed" down to be compatible with the last generation of devices. I have tried to type the URL's in directly a few times, but most of the time it does not work. Anybody else have success here. I really would like to find a program that will record the digital streaming video for playback offline at a later time. Kind of like Avantgo for video news reports. With a 1 gig memory card, this should not be too hard.
Is the bandwidth of 802.11b too slow for a continuous stream of video to keep up with betaplayer, if you are just loading a normal xVid avi file? I assume that an asx streaming file is further optimized for less bandwidth requirements? I have the new pre-n router from Belkin and get almost full signal everywhere in my house, so I assume I am close the the 11MB speed.
