Exclamation WEP authentication won't work - but says connected

My Axim X3i has the wireless built in. It works great if I have no authentication set. Once I turn on the encryption, I put the key into the axim. This does not seem to be working, though - as it will say I am connected with great signal strenth/speed, but will not allow me to ping or surf. The little lock is X'ed out. Three other systems work fine on that router, and now I'm hooking up another at work and have the same problem (and my Axim is my only means of testing the network).

Are you using a key or a passphrase? What encryption level are you using and how long is the key?

128bit key... 26 char key (and yes, that does now seem odd that it's not a 32 char key)

it used a passcode to create the key(my passcode was 8-digits)

26 characters is correct. 128bit WEP uses a 104 bit key. So if it's 26 characters then it's a HEX key. Does the Axim give you the option of entering the key in ASCII or Hex? If so - ensure that you're entering it in Hex.

That's fine. As long as you are entering the key, not the passocde into the Axim.

Do you have the authentication set for open or shared?

Passcode warning!

It's been my experience, as well as others I've run into, that the key generated by the passcode seems to operate very inconsistency. The lesson learned is to create your own key(s) and enter manually into the blocks for key1, key2, and key3. Then select which key will be your current active one and enter that manually into your PocketPC. I went round and round on this one until I figured out the passcode was the culprit. Not everyone has run into this, but with my Linksys Wireless G router, it was a wrestling match. As soon as I went the manual route, everything worked perfectly.

Some routers require you also have MAC filtering set up to use Open.
