Just a post to brag about my recent accomplishment.
I made myself a Cantenna out of a pringles can and some miscellaneous hardware. My antenna pulls in wifi over a ten mile stretch... directional (Yagi) conncted to a Cf wi-fi card to my Axim...Yahoo! :approve:
Surf and ride 2.4Ghz for free...If its free, its for me
You'd be amazed how far a signal can go if you have a good antenna (like the cantenna) and clear line-of-sight. I got to see a project where they took a 30 meter bluetooth dongle and upped the signal to about a mile with antennas.

i was looking into this cantenna thing and i'm pretty clear on how you can use it as a "wifi-booster" for your existing wifi by replacing an antenna on your wireless linksys router with the cantenna, and then pointing the cantenna towards an area that otherwise would not pick up the wifi signal from your router, however....
i'm not clear on how you can use the cantenna in reverse, for example let's assume that you don't have a wireless router or internet connection at home, how can you use the cantenna to surf off of a neighbors wifi connection? where would you connect the cantenna to on your axim or computer in order to pick up distant wifi signals that you otherwise might not be able to pick up on without the cantenna?
well, using your neighbors wifi is kind of illegal, (unless that let you, I know I wouldn't) but, it might come with a connector to connect to a pci slot NIC. I 100 percent sure though never heard of anything like this...
you can use a better antenna on either end, or both. it just requires a card with an external antenna connector.
and while im on the subject, anyone taken their axim apart and added an external antenna connector? I would really like to do this on mine.

Actually, using the neighbor's wifi isn't illegal, as long they left it wide open. When you use wireless you are broadcasting on the public domain (radio signals). And if you happen to be broadcasting into your neghbors' house, and they didn't have to commit any computer fraud (cracked wep keys/mirrored mac addresses) to access your network, then thats your fault and they're free to use away.
Security on wireless devices is all on the shoulders of the end user.

it is amazing how far line of sight can go...even with out external antennas or any changes i can get super good range on my linksys routers if they are line of sight to my laptop :)

Actually, using anyone's internet without permission can be illegal, secured or not. It's a gray area depending on a lot of different factors, but there are some good articles from Mark Rasch on the subject.
