I was wondering if it is possible to use my X30 to connect to a mobile phone and send text messages to my contacts (just like I would with the phone, except with the X30)

You can use a program called Easy SMS if your phone has BT or IR. Or if you have wi-fi access send an email using this cheat sheet by carrier.
