I just got my x50v yesterday and I went and bought a Linksys WRT54GS router to replace my wired router. I set the router up for 802.11b and turned on the wi-fi on the Axim, it found my SSID and I'm able to browse the net just fine. I tried going thru the wi-fi guide to turn on WEP, which I also then enabled in the router, but after trying to configure the Axim, I couldn't get connected. I ended up doing a hard reset and got back to where I can surf again.
So my question is...if I'm just surfing web pages, and not doing any confidential email or banking, is WEP important? I guess I would like to get it working so I could check my bank accounts, however....I think that's where WEP is useful?
1. - it will ensure that no-one can sit outside your house and "listen" to what you're doing.
2. - it will prevent someone from sitting outside your house and using your network to surf the net, download kiddie porn or whatever.
I would highly recommend WEP or WPA-PSK. I'd go with WPA-PSK.

The problem is not what you are doing while you are on your Wi-Fi connection. It is that ANYONE can get on there and do whatever they want. The example that keeps comming up is with a "open" network, I can stand outside your house and surf kiddie porm under your IP address. When the cops come it will look like it was all you. And you will have a tough time proving otherwise.
You are better off putting some protection on just in case. If for no other reason you pay for your bandwith so why share with the rest of the people around you.
I have the same router. It can be set up pretty easy. At a minimum I would turn off the SSID by going into your router settings under "Wireless" and "basic wireless settings" change the raido button form "enable" to "disable". Then try your Axim and make sure it works. After that go back to your router settings and go under "Wireless" then "wireless security" and select "WEP" - "Default transmit key" can be left at "1" - Choose "64 bits 10 hex digits" form the pull down menu. Then type a "passphrase" in the box. Anything you want, kind of like a pass word. Then click the "Generate" button. Then connect your Axim and type in the "Key 1" when you get the prompt.
After that you should be good to go. Don't forget to do the "save settings" when you change anything in your router set up. Good Luck and let us know if you need more help~

*EDIT* See, in the time it took me to post this, someone already responded with the kiddie porn example!

I know you didn't ask me. But, I would say using MAC filtering using the "Allow only these MAC address" is just as good. Of course a smart hacker can get arround all of this stuff. But I would think the goal is to keep the creap standing in front of my house off my network. :)

Good conversation guys. I'm assuming the Axim has a MAC address, right? If so, anyone know how to find it? I'll have to do some more looking around the router for all these settings. Of course, there doesn't seem to be a user manual.
Mac Filtering is ok... As long as you understand what it does.
MAC Filtering tells the router that unless the packets are coming from a specific MAC address, do not forward them. So it provides some protection against the problem number 2 that I highlighted (someone jumping onto your network) but provides no protection against someone reading what is going on with your network.
And it's very simple to get around.
I would consider:
WPA-PSK
or
WEP
or if you don't want to encrypt your network (for some reason)
MAC Filtering and SSID Disable

It's buried in the Odyssey client somewhere. Might also be on the label on the back.

I disabled the SSID and everything worked still. Then I went to the router and enabled WEP and generated a key. The Axim doesn't connect anymore, and doesn't promt me to enter in a key. Instead, it takes me to the connection settings. Is that what's suppose to happen?
Turn on your wi-fi and tap the signal icon in the lower right. When it comes up tap settings, then tap your network form the list. General will show the network name, connect to should say work. Then tap network key form the tabs at the bottom. Here is where you type the key form your router set up.
For the MAC address start your Wi-Fi and click the signal strength icon in the lower right. Then select Advanced for the tabs at the bottom. Your MAC address is then displayed there.
Good Luck~

Sorry, new user error. I found some instructions on entering in the WEP code, but where I was doing it, the keyboard was blocking where I had to enter it in. So I hid the keyboard, put the cursor in the WEP key field, brought back the keyboard, and then typed it in. :) Ok'd out and we're good to go. So this is all I need to do, right? Only those with the keys can use my connection. I'm still using all wired connections for my other 3 PC's in the house since I went thru all of the trouble of running cat5 everywhere when we built the house. So this will probably be my only wireless device for now.
I'll do some more reading on WPA-PSK. The encryption sounds nice.
