CF Card for GSM/GPRS too expensive ??

Folks,

I have spent considerable time researching this archive and still have a question. i will appreciate if anyone can respond:

I would like to use my Dell Axim as my GSM phone as well (besides doing all the "computer stuff"). I understand that this maybe done by inserting a Compact Flash GSM/GPRS card in the Axim 50 slots and subscribing to the GSM Provider (AT&T Wireless in my case).

I am a bit surprised with the cost of these CF cards though as they seem to be in US $ 200+ range. Isn't there any cheaper ones available.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

whoa didn't know they were that much.

they were offering them as one of the free gifts when you bought a x50/V from dell UK.

so i reckon there will be a few on ebay that ppl got free and didn't want.

please post if you find a good deal.

I'm looking too. Imagine if Dell incorporated a phone on the x50vph (Phone edition). Oh ya, I'm ready to order that one.

But I'm not paying 200$US for a simple CF plugin. Nope too much.

Hmm Been there....

Hi All. :0 Finally, something I can help with. :)

I have tried TWO different CF GSM cards with my x50v. I wanted SO much to use it as a phone as that is the only thing it lacks to be the complete device for me.

Both of the cards I used were around 240-250 bucks.

Anycom (forget the numbers)
and a Chi Mei from Convergtech (sp?)

They both share two very dissapointing and ultimately defeating traits. They can only be used with the cabled handsfree earbud. I grew so tired of trying to untangle these things and missing calls because of it and unfortunately, they have no speakerphone capability.

CF GSM cards are rare and there are only a few manufacturers. Another thing that seem sreally wierd to me is that the headsets don't appear to be standard. I tried a jabra kit in the Chi Mei and it didn't work...it seems like neither of them work with any headset other than the one that shipped with it. That made things a lot more difficult than they needed to be as well.

I thought for a minute, I would be able to have a dell phone, but alas, I have started carrying an audiovox ppc-4100 (yuck) in hopes that Dell will hurry up with it's phone edition. (it HAS to be coming, right?)

Running Voice GSM DID work very well with the Chi MEi card and almost made it tolerable, as it helped with the power usage, but the headset issue was just too much of a pain..no place in my krussel case to carry it.. :(

so yes, TOO EXPENSIVE. :)

(I've spent about 600 bucks just on CF GSM and accessories and still don't like it. :( )

(anyone want to buy a card? or two? :) )

I got mine free from Dell. I had a choice of 4 freebies (CF radio, TV tuner, CF 56K modem of GPRS card) and spent ages agonising over which one to get. Eventuallly i went for the GSM card and apart from a couple of phone calls (just to see if i could do it) Haven't used it since.

The problems are
1) It sticks up too far from the axim to sit in my pocket (or case)
2) you have to use a separate earpice
3) I'm sure it sucks battery power (and lets face it we don't have too much to spare)
4) I have a phone that does a far better job of being a phone!!!!

If it wasn't for that fact that nobody realy likes the other 3 options i would have felt cheated!

If I had the choice i'd have taken a standard CF card or battery instead anyday. But it was free i suppose

OK thats it. Rant Over

Definitely Expensive

I just ordered my Axim X50v and I was looking forward to use my PDA as a cell phone since I travel overseas but after seeing the price tags for these CF cards, I changed my mind. I think I'm going to get a tiny GSM cell phone with bluetooth connectivity. That'll do it for me.
