Zone Alarm problem

Hi all,
I'm trying to access the Internet from my Axim with ZA Wireless Security running.

It worked briefly when I lowered the Internet Zone Security (under Firewall) from High to Medium. But, for some reason, that stopped working.

I tried opening all the ports in custom settings for the Internet Zone. I allowed TCP ports 990,999,5678,5679 and UDP port 1900. None of this worked.

I tried enabling NetBios for TCP/IP for my network card.

I AM able to sync Axim and laptop wirelessly through ActiveSync WITH ZA running.

Any help is appreciated.

Are you using a router or an ad-hoc connection? If you have a router, ZA on the PC should have nothing to do with web access. If you are using ad-hoc, you may have success giving the Axim's IP full access. Sorry, though, I'm not familar with ZA so I cannot give details on how to do this.

i had a similar problem and found that i had to add the IP address of my Axim to my "trusted zone" and then drop the protection in the "trusted zone" to "low" i.e. the firewall is off. since the firewall is off only for connections between my axim and laptop, i think it should be fine.

i was just looking at zone alarm and i can't find where i entered the IP of my Axim but i could swear that that's how i did it. if nothing else, try dropping your trusted zone to "low" and the try and find how you add things to your "trusted zone." i'll keep looking and if i find it, i'll let you know.

Thanks for the resplies!

I should've mentioned, it is an ad-hoc setup. Just a laptop and the Axim.

I've had some success adding the axim's IP address (or the range of possible IP's since it changes every time I turn on wi-fi on the axim) and setting the Internet Zone Security to Medium. But I want it to work at High security ie stealth mode. I know there is a way. Just don't know how, yet.

Also, there is the Advanced button under Firewall/Main that has some options for an ICS/NAT gateway. Not sure if these are applicable or not.

Well, apparently they are. I have it set to 'This computer is an ICS/NAT gateway.' The local address of '192.168.0.5' shows up.

Also tried, 'This computer is a client of an ICS/NAT gateway running Zone Alarm Wireless Security.' The gateway address shows up.

I think the laptop *is* the ICS/NAT gateway because my Axim has it's IP address listed as the gateway in the WLAN utility.

Still, ZA is blocking my Axim from the Internet.

I have three Zones in ZA on my laptop.

Cable Connection, Network Type, Internet Zone.
Wireless Connection, Network Type, Internet Zone (also tried as Trusted Zone).
PDA, IP Range (192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254), Trusted Zone (added this myself).

The reason I have the IP Range in the last is because the IP address on my pda changes everytime I turn on wireless on the pda. In other words, everytime the two see each other through wi-fi. Only the last three numbers change so it is some variation of 192.168.0.xxx.

Upgraded to Service Pack 2 (finally) on the laptop with the hope that it would fix things. It didn't.

Have posted in the Zone Alarm forum with this problem. Got one reply suggesting the ICS/NAT option.

Any suggestions?

Same problems here. I haven't found a solution yet (except for setting Internet Zone Security to Medium). I'll keep searching

Oké. For me the problem was the ICS/NAT settings. Turned on the 'This computer is a ICS/NAT Gateway' with local address 192.168.0.1.
One thing I noticed is that the IP address for the (in my case Bluetooth) network adapter is 192.168.0.1 (same as local address setting in ZoneAlarm).
If I compare this to the zones in ZoneAlarm the Network (in the trusted zone) has IP address 192.168.0.0. Maybe you should try to add this to your range or use this setting instead of a range??

Tried it a couple of different ways as you suggested. Still not OK.

In my case, the IP address (192.168.0.5) of my laptop becomes the gateway address on my Axim. I think this is as it should be because I can surf without ZA running.

The IP address on my Axim is always a variation of 192.168.0.xxx. Again, this is right. Since the IP on the Axim is always a range, I added the range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254 and made it Trusted.

Does this sound right to you? Are you able to surf with Internet Zone Security set to High ie "Stealth Mode?"

BTW, I am able to ping laptop from Axim (with ZA running) using Socket Wi-Fi Companion. It's very cool. Just wish I could find the setting to make it all work with ZA.

Yes.
I realize now that i forgot an important piece of information: I've added the ip addresses of my DNS servers (listed after a ipconfig /all) to the trusted zone. Without them it doesn't work for me...

I found this out after Netfront gave me a 'DNS server not specified' error instead of PIE's 'page not found'. Do you have Netfront to test if you have the same error message?

Woo-hoo! I'm surfing like a mad dog. With ZA in stealth.

I added DNS servers, but no internet. Then, took a chance and put wi-fi zone as trusted and bingo. Nothing but net.

No, I haven't heard of Netfront but will try.

I'm posting this with Axim.

Thanks
