POP Set-Up for Sympatico

Hello all;

Looking for some help from anyone living in the Greater Toronto Area who uses Bell Sympatico as their ISP.

My Axim X30 was sending and receiving e-mail without problem through Sympatico until, I upgraded to Sympatico's new platform which uses SSL.

Their tech. support guided me though setting up my home PC but would not help with my Pocket PC. Dell would also not provide any support in regards to setting up e-mail accounts but, referred my to this forum.

The problem is that I cannot configure the accounts to send/receive. I have used and copied the settings provided to me by Sympatico. These settings work with both Outlook and Outlook Express but, not with my Axim. I was provided with "pophm.sympatico.ca" and "smtphm.sympatico.ca" for imcoming & outgoing mail. Further I have checked off the SSL boxes etc. and still nothing.

Any assistance on the exact set-up would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Bob :)

Welcome to the site, Bob. Sorry I probably cannot give you the specific help you asked for, but a couple of things to try:
Try using the complete address for your email name

Try using the IPs for the servers (instead of "pophm.sympatico.ca" and "smtphm.sympatico.ca." You can get the IPs by pinging the names from your PC. Interestingly, when I tried it from the states, it redirected me to hotmail servers and timed out, but that may be because ping is not active on the servers).

What do you have in the "Domain" field? In my case with Comcast, entering anything in that field prevented email from working.

Hello Everyone;

Thanks for your responses. I ended up going through an account set up again lastnight. After the first page with e-mail address, the second page with name, user name and p.w., windows messaging did some sort of auto configuration thing while I was connected to my service provider. It then defaulted to "pop1.sympatico.ca" for incoming mail and "mail.1xbell.ca" for outgoing mail. Sympatico has never provided me with these settings. Where it got those from, I have no idea. But, for whatever reason now, I'm able to connect to Sympatico's mail server. I am able to send a message from my Pocket PC but, when I send a message to my self and attempt to retrieve it from my Pocket PC, I have no luck. I noticed that none of the "SSL" boxes are checked. When I do check them with this configuration, I get an error saying "cannot make SSL soket connection" or something to that effect. Nothing is listed in the "domain" field. I was under the impression I needed to have those SSL boxes checked in order to connect to this new Sympatico platform. At lesast that is the way they advised me to configure outlook express on my home PC. I'm confused!

Any thoughts?

Also, one other problem I have noticed while using window messaging on my Axim, is that when you toggle between several e-mail accounts, the send/retrieve button will be greyed out on occasion. I have to exit the program and re-open it then select another account to send/receive mail from. Other times this does not occur. I can switch between 2-3 different accounts and check my mail without having to close out of the program first. Has anyone else expienced this problem?

Bob

Setup sympatico email

I made sympatico email work with my x51v. Here's the way:

User name: Set to your full email address (with @sympatico.ca)
Password: Your password
Incoming mail: pophm.sympatico.ca:995
Outgoing mail: smtphm.sympatico.ca:25 (the port number is the key to make it work)
Domain: (leave it as empty)
SSL: Enabled for both incoming and outgoing

Good luck!
