Weak connection with TrueMobile 1180 WiFi CF card

I just got my TrueMobile 1180 CF card today and am very disappointed with the range. Sitting next to my D-Link DI-614+ router I get an excellent signal. However, if I walk away just 25 feet it goes to good. I walk to the far corner of the floor and I get marginal (and by far, it's not very because my house is pretty small). Going upstairs...forget about it. I'm gonna head on over to my local Circuit City and try out wireless CF cards from Linksys and D-Link to see if it's any better.

Not comforting

That's not good to hear! I am relying heavily on the wireless features of the X5. That's one of the main reasons I got it plus the GPS.

Try switching your mode to "Full Auto", I've heard this helps some.

Let me know what your research uncovers. I'm waiting for my Sync Cradle to get my CF installed -- dell does not ship the cradle with the ppc -- (nice concept - I've had it for 2 days but can't sync and use accessories)

Patiently waiting.

You don't need the cradle to do ActiveSync. I assume you go the 300Mhz 32MB version right? It comes with a USB cable that will allow you to sync. I have the same X5 version and that's what I do.

Nevermind, I think I see what you're saying. You bought the 400Mhz 64MB version that DOES come with a cradle. It's just Dell didn't ship it all together. That is pretty ridiculous.

Mad Dell Shipping

MAN what an experience with buying Dell. A great product but they have a lot to do to get their shipping model ironed out.

My Axim shipped from Memphis, my cradle dock from Houston, My Car Charger from TN, and my GPS from wherever.

Seems like they can streamline this a bit better. I had over 4 UPS tracking numbers with my order.... ARGH!

I bought the 400MHz version.

Thanks - sorry about the confusion.

That's odd, *everything* I ordered besides one 256meg SD card was shipped together. This included:

spare battery, sync cradle, leather case, compact flash cards, wireless card (TM1180), mobile usb cable, actual axim unit, etc etc.

I ordered mine on 4-8, received it on the 11th.

About the TM1180 card.
I also get a poor signal. I attribute this to the low power features of this card. It doesn't seem to be nearly as harsh on the battery as the other wireless cards I've seen. Although, I've also never seen the connection drop below 11megabits either. Maybe once it goes out of range it drops to a lower speed with a higher signal indicator?

The Ax will do fine with wifi as long as you use a good wifi card. The Dell TrueMobile is not a good card, IMO. It does have that nice little antenna, but what good is it if the range is horrible? If you want a great low power with good range card, get the Socket. If you want something with good range, ok power, and cheap, go Netgear or Linksys. I personally use the Netgear with the Linksys driver so I can have profiles.

I'm going to return my TrueMobile. I started research deals for alternatives and found a pretty decent on for the Netgear MA701. Take a look at my post here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=8862

Yeah, my truemobile is going out in the mail on Monday. I called Dell today and got a authorization number. My experience was horrible with WEP. I was able to Sync wirelessly once, and have not been able to do it again. No changes were made either, that's what is weird.

probably a better idea to get more signal is dont use WEP just filter the mac addresses allowed through your access point and turn off ssid broadcast.

Hmm

the dell true moble is true crap i sent mine back and got a socket wlan, very happy with it, yes it cost more but by far worth every penny :) i get about a 3 block range the dell fails just out the front door :/ pice of crap send it back.. i have a linksys wifi router, also dell tech told me it was normal to have to insert cf wifi card 15 to 20 times to get it to even work :/ right and im the pope. face it other then the axim which is ok, the rest of dell pda prducts seem to fall well below par when compared to anyone else out there, anyone, even radioshack does better !!!! just my 2 cents worth..

well i havent used the wifi CF but i have the Dell bluetooth card and that has a very good range and works very well with my nokia phone.

TBH i dont know if Dell actually produce their own accessories or just re badge other kit cos the bluetooth card is the phillips/belkin card.

I'm using the TM1180 with my netgear AP without any problems at all. Granted the range isn't the same as the card in my laptop, but I can get approx 300 feet away with the AP indoors and myself out, without any problems.

My dell Truemobile 1180 works great. I get about 1000 foot range and its always worked for me. Do you have any 2.4 GHz phones or alarm systems interfering with it?
