Axim unable to obtain IP address from router

I just set up my Netgear MR814 router for use w/ my Axim. Problem is, the Axim connects to the router, but can't obtain an IP address. There is full signal strength, but under the WLAN utility it shows 0.0.0.0 for the gateway and IP. Any idea what's going on?

Do you have DHCP server enabled on the router? Then on the Axim, do you have the wireless connection setup to obtain and address automatically?

Hmmm, I don't remember seeing that option, to enable DHCP. I'll check it out again.

I think, by default the wireless router (at least my Linksys) is setup for DHCP. Dynamic address is easier to implement than static addressing, so it makes more sense to give the easier choice as an out-of-the-box option.

Actually I had an MR814 that would not dynamically assign an ip address to any of my pocketpcs. It would to a laptop just not to a pocketpc. manually set an ip on your pocketpc and see if that makes it work

Okay, I'll try that. Ummm, which leads me to another question: how does one do that? I don't know what IP address to choose. I suppose it would be the IP address of my desktop with a modification to the last digit? Thanks.

My Netgear WR614 seems to do the same thing from time to time, as does my dad's WR604 Netgear router. Unfortunately, I think it has something to do with Netgear, which is why I'm glad I'll be getting a new router here soon.

As for setting an IP Address, you can search google for IP address and Windows Mobile 2003, or check http://wifi.aximsite.com/ as it might have that information, as well.

Yes you are correct. Do this go to start -> run -> type "cmd" in the run box (no quotes) then when the DOS windows type "ipconfig" (no quotes) and hit enter.

C:\Documents and Settings\root>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.124
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Here you can see the IP Address, if this was you, you could make the PPC 192.168.1.125 (assuming nothing on your network is already using this IP) Set the Default Gateway to the same IP son here (in this case 192.168.1.1). Don't forget to add the DNS servers. You can see that as well as more info by doing "ipconfig /all"

C:\Documents and Settings\root>ipconfig /all

I have the same issue attempting to connect to the WiFi at work with my x50v.
It connects to the access point but shortly afterward I get an error dialog
saying that it can not get an IP address.
The AP is a Cisco and it is set up to hand out IP addresses via dhcp.
My windows laptop connects just fine.

I will be working with our IT guys to figure this out. Will post more when I learn
more.

hey don't forget about the ole VW who originally told you to set manually! I know, I know Ogmios post had a little more clarity than mine but sheesh....just kidding.

ABF: you dont really need access to the router. Even if the router is spitting out ips via dhcp, you can still manually set an ip on your pocketpc. just pick a high enough one that it won't be used by others.

Netgear equipment sucks btw.. :) I upgraded my firmware MR814 with a beta that netgear gave me and it fried my router. it still worked but had major problems. Couldnt relash it or anything. I finalyy just pulled it out and bought a Linksys.

BTW it sucks if you have to alternate between static and dynamic ip. I used a program out there called net profile I think, to automate the registry changes, to switch between manual and dynamic.

Sorry :) I did tech support in college, old habbits die hard.

At any rate, glad it helped you guys get online.

Enjoy your internet on the throne. Make sure though that you keep it away from your important bits, I don't think Wi-Fi is good for the lil' swimmers.
