How does this product work?
I like it b/c it will tell me quickly all the open wifi spots.

But how does the radar part of it work with , or without like me, the gps device?

The radar is just a graphic display of how close you are to the "HOTSPOT". The closer towards the center the stronger the signal. But as far as showing the direction (left/right/forward/back) it is totally random.
