Unpaid Use of the Verizon High-Speed Data Network

All of the threads regarding using the Motorola V710 bluetooth to allow the X50V to access the web suggest that it is OK to do so without having to purchase a separate data plan. I was told by Verizon Wireless that a data plan is not available for the V710.

Verizon Wireless customer support appears to view this use of the high speed network as being inappropriate. This could result in excessive data charges ($15/MB) vice just the use of air time. Clearly, this is not the route to go.

Does anyone know with certainty whether this is an appropriate (and legal)connectivity option? By legal, I mean whether this use of the high speed network is authorized by Verizon.

I can connect with the high speed network without any problem. I can't connect to the low speed network since I can't overcome the username/password error message.

Perhaps a poll of users regarding the length of time using the service, whether any negatives were incurred by users of the high speed network using the V710, or feedback from Verizon itself would be helpful.

I use the Xpress network with no additional charges, and have been for a couple of years. Last month, I was in Baltimore and used it for 65 minutes, new bill from Verizon shows the calls with a $0.00 cost for each call.

I also have a V710 with Verizon. I have been able to use both networks with no problem. The story I heard regarding needing a data plan was that it was unneccesary because if you had a camera phone, you automatically had access to the high speed network. They want to send pictures using that network.

It was easy to set up a connection to the high speed network via the V710. But, I am having tremendous difficulty in setting up the low-speed (qnc) network. My X50V is correctly paired with y V710. But I appear to be having problems dialing the #777 number and establishing the connection. The connection keeps bombing out with an incorrect username/password message.

Did you have this problem? How did you resolve?

I just tried the low speed network and also cannot connect, get invalid user name/password; but I never need to use it as I can always connect to the high speed service.
Are there areas where you can't connect to the Express Network and need to connect low speed?

I too have a v710 and connect with the express network sometimes but have never been charged for it and im on the Americans Choice Plan.
Are you using the right username and password for the low speed connection?

The user name and passwords are:

(National Access - Express Network)
Number: #777
Username: your_mobile_number@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw

(QNC)
Number: #777
Username: qnc
Password: qnc

I have seen posts on the V710.org forum where others using the X50V have run into the same issue. That is, the username and password are both correctly entered, but the Axim is unable to connect to the internet. Interestingly, we can all connect to the 1x (high speed)network without a hitch using the same #777.

Does anyone know why the low-speed network is giving such trouble? Why can I connect to the low-speed network using my BT laptop and the same V710 but I can't connect using the Axim?

I remember reading not too long ago that you have to change the data speed setting on the V710 to move to the lower speed connection. I searched around a bit for this on Howard Forums, which is likely where I read it, after reading the other low-speed post from Mr. Sideous. I couldn't find it, though. Additionally, I couldn't find any menu items on my V710 where the speed could be changed. But, there are all kinds of tricks for these phones like pushing the pound and then a whole series of numbers to reach a menu item that you never would have known about if you didn't read it on one of these forums.

The point is that I don't think you need to be looking for settings to change on the Pocket PC -- I think you need to be looking for settings to change on the phone. I'll try to find the posts I was reading when I get home later today.

To answer Gdio's question, I've also read that the phone defaults to QNC when you're not in a 1x area, so I'd assume the connection settings would be the same but it would automatically bump onto QNC. I'd like to try it, but I haven't yet been in a non-1x area.

I, btw, also have been using the 1x network (sparingly) for the past three months that I've had the V710 with no additional charges. I kept myself on the older ACI plan when I upgraded equipment. With my previous phone, I used a data cable and QNC for a few years.

Well, here is one post: http://www.v710.org/forums/showthread.php?t=194

Can't recall if this is all I saw on the topic or not. I couldn't figure out how to get the phone to switch data speeds, but maybe you'll have better luck.

Oh, I get it:

press menu then dial 073887* all within 10 seconds. This will take you to a security code screen. Enter 000000 for the security code and press ok and it will take you to a menu you'd never otherwise see. Select data rate then change then 14.4/14.4 then ok.

Now, I didn't actually try to switch the data rate on my phone because I'm blissfully happy using my 1x MOU connection and don't want to goof it up. If you're intent on using QNC, it's probably worth a shot.

No, but it does have BT, so it makes it easier.
You can get cables that connect the PDA to your phone, www.gomadic.com has a good selection.

k, i have a gomadic cable that connects my x50v to my t720, but verizon changed they're net access so that it's rediculus in cost, instead of $5 a month so im looking for something better. Connected to faster speeds for free sounds much better. Is there somewhere that I could get a list of compatible phones? I need a new phone anyways and i can switch my gomadic cable for free. the v710 is very $$$

You shouldn't need to buy a data plan as I believe you are referring to.

I don't know anything about the t720, but I'd think that you'd have the same options with that setup as you'd have with the V710. The only difference is that you'd have to use a cable instead of bluetooth. I used to use an LG phone with a data cable with the same data options as I use on my V710. If you've had the phone for a while, you might not have National Access enabled, so you might have to use the 14.4 QNC connection, but it should work. The only difference is that I do it wirelessly now through bluetooth. I used a cable from http://www.thesupplynet.com/

It's been a while since I used a cable, but thesupplynet has some manuals on their website, I believe, that will tell you how to set up the PPC with a phone using a data cable.
