Axim50v gain net access wtih p2p config?

I currently have a wired network in my home. I cannot, simply put, replace my existing wired router with a WiFi Router for it is my DSL modem as well.

So, I was wondering if my Axim 50v can connect to one of my 24/7 PCs, which has access to the internet. This would allow the PDA to leech or gain access to the internet by connecting to a PC. Is this possible?

Yes, yes. I could add a WAP device to my existed wired home network (router/modem), but it cooosts way too much.

My ideal setup is to install a USB wireless B adapter into my PC and have my axim50v connect to the internet via that PC's USB wireless B adapter, as said before.

Please, any help/tips would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to put this Wifi capability to waste :(.

Welcome to the site!

Yes, it should be possible, but ad-hoc connections are a bit of a pain in my experience.

Take a look at Ikehiker's Wifi Guide.

Thanks for the help!

But... damn. I did a search on this "ad-hoc" thing, and so many users had trouble. And I have not found step by step instructions.

So I guess I'll have to save my money to get a stupid WAP, yeesh.. why do those WAPs cost so much more than a WifiRouter >:- (

I may be mistaken (and, please, if anyone sees this and doesn't think it's true, speak up), but you should be able to piggyback a wireless router on the ethernet router, either allowing it to have it's own network or by turning off the router functions so that it works just as a switch/access point.

welcome!

i use an ad-hoc connection with my axim without any problems.

setup the usb wifi adapter according to the manufactures instructions

turn on the wifi on your axim it will detect the wireless pc, you should be able to connect to the pc

make sure internet connection sharing (ICS) is setup on the pc.

you will be able to surf wirelessly, i do it with a number of pc's at my friends houses on both my pocket pc's.

if you go down this route and have problems pm me and i will do my best to solve them

R

edit: you can also setup wep/wpa enqryption for security its only one more step.

Oh wow! You may be my hope.

First of all, using WinXp Pro, I tinkered with ICS, but that was a long time ago for other reasons. Could you tell me how to configure/setup ICS in order to work inorder to share a connection via p2p with the axim?

Ok, Im trying to enabled ICS on my ethernet adapter ( I have not pruchased a WiFi adapter yet) to test how ICS will go. Sadly, with a google search about instructions of setting ICS, I did not find the check button to enable ICS.

Here's a screenshot that lacks the needed ICS controls, according to several sites.

Yes, we do this at work all the time when we are setting up wireless for some of our VPN Remote Access users. The only thing you have to be certain to do is to make sure the network number is not the same on both sides. Linksys normally uses the 192.168.1.0 network. The D-link I worked on used the 192.168.0.0 network. We use to use the 192.168.2.0 network for home users, but decided to leave the takehome routers on the default setting. We setup our DSL that we used for testing on the 192.169.3.0 network, so no matter which of the above we hooked up to, we would not have any problems.

Yaou can also turn it into a bridge, but you must be sure to disable the DHCP server on it. I can not remember if it get an address via DHCP or if you have to select a new address for it before you connect it up. This was more of a hassle than just moving the network number, so we quit doing it.

So you're saying I can add another router to my exisiting router? That sounds weird, but it sounds it may work. Though, I want to be sure that any wireless router connected (with ethernet) to my existing router will not conflict with the exisitng router.

Just grab an access point. No router needed. The Linksys WAP11 or WAP54G should work nicely for you.

Ad-hoc (Peer-to-peer) mode section of the WiFi Guide. (Although it doesn't have anything on ICS - the Windows help is good for that).

BTW, I think the reason you didn't have the ICS option was because you only have one network adapter on the PC. Once you'd installed a wireless adpater, the option would have been there (assuming you have WinXP or Win2K. I think other Windows versions require an additional installation for the option).

Internet Connection Sharing, or ICS information can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...e/default.mspx

One thing about Ad-Hoc networking, though, is that it typically does not have a router/access point/gateway that is used. You can, however, use ICS to setup that gateway, which will give you internet access.

ike is spot on there! (it had me stumped) once you set up a usb wifi adaptor you will get the option to share the internet connection, its fairly straight forward then, just a case of searching for the wifi connection with the axim, and configuring wep if required
