Walkie-Talkie

Someone posted a comment in a thread that you can use the AX like a 2-way radio. Can anyone help?

Yeah

I PMed the guy yesterday. I'm looking for more information on how to pull it off. A jump-start or 10-cent lesson so-to-speak.

Oh. OK, I thought you were trying to find the posting. Did you check M$ to see what "Microsoft Portrait" is? I've never heard of it but there must be info on their website.

Love this forum. Thanks.

Cool

I just installed it, works great. I used my AP connection, I will try a peer-2-peer connection sometime in the next week. I am using Dell Trumobile cards with two Axims @400mhz.

More Info

OK. You have me drooling. I understand the hardware and networking aspect.

Are you using an app' to execute the VoIP?

Can you provide a 10-cent lesson of how you set it up?

How about a review of its quality and functionality?

What is good; what is bad?

Just installed on my PC and on my Pocket PC. I love this little utility. I used bluetooth networking and was able to talk with my friend on the PC and while I roamed around the house. In a wireless networking domain I guess this can be a good utility. But outdoor use will have to wait.

I think they installed that portrait thing. Looking at the page it looks like wireless video 2 way, video i assume is optional. I sent the link to my home email I will have to try this tonight

Here is exactly what I did:

1.Downloaded Microsoft Portrait
2.Installed onto PDA's
3.Opened application
4.Click on Call/OK button
5.Type in IP address of other PDA or PC
6.Talk or Text Chat

Just some notes: I have installed it on my Axims, the quality is great as long as you dont get to close to the mic. I ran it while connected via DHCP to my access point. I will eventually try connecting ad-hoc to check the range.

I installed the PC version on my Win2k machine as well. I was able to dial out, receive calls and chat back and forth. Although I was not able to speak from my pc, I was able to hear myself from my Axim.

The program is all IP based, but you dial the address like a phone number.
I will include some screenshots later.

Wow. App Rox. I don't quite understand why it's only half duplex though, at least for just audio. Maybe a PPC just doesn't have the ponies to do that. I wonder if it would go full dx between two PCs?
