Large Letter in Middle of Screen

A friend of mine has this happening to him and I saw it on my Dell X3 years ago, but cannot remember what cleared it. He goes into Contacts and there is a square about 1 inch with a large letter N in the middle of it. He has an Ipac, but I have seen it on AXIMs. Thought I posted on this before, but can't find it.

Any ideas how to get rid of it?

No, Not really.
An (X) in my post denotes a wireless post from my Axim.
A (T) in my post indicates a wireless post from my ipod Touch.

The letter appears, at least on my x50v, when I hold down the "down" button when in the contact list. It will scroll line-by-line for the first page and then go into "Super Jump Ahead Mode" where it will jump from letter to letter, ie from the O's to the P's.

If the letter is staying on the screen, maybe either the down button is stuck or the unit thinks it it being pressed when it is not.
Palm III -> Palm IIIe -> iPaq H3650 -> Palm m500 -> x50 -> x50v

I've got to watch out for that problem myself.
