Can my Internet Explorer be saved?

I think my internet explorer is trashed. I have an x50v, wm2003se. I was trying to backup my sd card, when I realized that the directories under Avantgo were all messed up. (this problem could be one more manifestation of the advantgo cache on sd or cf card bad behviour- overall managed to squeeze 1.3gb on a 1gb disk ).

I did end up having to rebuild the sd card. I reinstalled avantgo and things have not been the same since. But since so many things have changed, I am somewhat reluctant to do a hard reset and rely on the backups.

I get the dreaded "page you are looking for is not found". The pda also will not sync wirelessly with my desktop and IE will not function. I thought it was a wireless problem, but i get my weather updates, and avantgo will also sync just fine with it's internet server. Obviously, i have an ip address and i am connected to the right network.

As a further test, I also installed netfront and after its page building and the fact that you have to tap several different icons to go anywhere, it connects to the internet just fine.

I did a search and others have similar problems, some clearly were not resolved. Most of us have assumed it is a wireless problem, when it appears to be a software problem. So I am curious, whether anyone as sorted out the registry entries for IE to allow it to be repaired or rebuilt without a hard reset.

Sorry for the long post, and also sorry if this is the wrong place to put it. i know some of you will say stick with netfront it's better, but inquring minds want to know.....

I think the whole point of this thread is to avoid the hard reset:

Sorry, but I don't know of any solution besides a hard reset as well. If you have a good backup, a hard reset won't be so painful.

I am trying to avoid a hard reset, 1) because of the card corruption, I'm not 100% sure of the back up or state of ppc at the time, but 2) I also think that many of the wireless issues that people have may actually be IE or software corruption and i would love understand it better.

Registry editor is your friend

Update: Hadn't searched the registry for explorer or anything close. Finally did that and found some entries that had strange characters. I deleted the characters and voila! PIE works. Now I don't recommend this and certainly don't take responsibility for it, but quite often you can tell when things "aren't quite right" so.....

So now, PIE works, opera is released and there is always netfront 3.3 beta. Netfront still doesn't work for some private webmail services, opera shows sooooo much promise but like wm5 is not quite ready for prime time. PIE works, but is so lacking. you really aren't looking forward to the second date. so i'm rotating for the time being.

All this to say, for some -- even if you aren't a hacker by nature -- take a look under the hood. it can be most instructive and you might just get back up and running. Cheers and good luck.

Just say 'NO' to PIE!
Opera has to be the fastest browser out there right now. I've used them all and I was skeptical about it but man... it cooks!

i agree. I can't wait for opera to be fully cooked. I don't know what the issues were with producing a gui for the .ini file. I don't know who was in charge of the graphics and layout. I don't know why it doesn't have the polish of their own pc browser. I just know that it doesn't. but I will wait and will eventually be part of the fold, but unless my hack works in the ini file, i cannot live with the hit in my main mememory.

irony.... there are folks out here who want it to succeed and have spent time and energy to polish the inital offereing. I just hope the suggestions and hacks are graciously incorporated in the final design and the commercial ware only approach is reconsidered.

Mine worked for a two connections and then quit again. I'm wondering if something in the registry gets changed or corrupted. Since I've been using opera I haven't really delved into it further.

semi bump here. Update: I have been rotating browsers, but I like Opera the best, even on 2003se. I'm Opera biased, as I use it on my pc as well.

Now to PIE. I notice people still get the dreaded page not found message. I've found that the history and cache get cluttered. I also suspect that some of the web pages put things in the PIE cache and cookies even if you don't use it, which may be causing some of the problem.

Bottom line, open PIE and clean out the history, cache and cookies. Do it when you are not connected and outside of helper programs such as memmaid or SKtools. Better yet download safemode and do it from there. As I have rotated around and occaisionally had trouble connecting, this has gotten me up and running in [I]all[I] my browsers.

Hope this helps others.
