Question Do I HAVE to use Outlook in order to sync?

I honestly don't want to use Outlook for various reasons. So, I'm curious if there is other software I can use yet still sync with my Axim x30. Any insight is appreciated greatly.

If you use other software you must use 3rd party software, so it is possible to do it, but I've found it painful, very painful. What other software do you want to sync with and why?

The why part is easy. I'm trying to rid my computer of all things Microsoft. I've seen a program called Barca and it's fantastic but it only supports (and not well, I might add...) Palm at this point. So, it got me thinking there's got to be other desktop programs that sync with the Axim or rather WM2003SE.

It's the what part I'm seeking to solve. What third party software combinations have you used?

not necessarily ...

if you are using outlook as a source for your emailing & contacts ..etc .. then the answer is yes ...

but if you are not using outlook as email client or need to sync the (e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes) within outlook ... then .. there are alternatives when it comes to wanting only to sync files, folders ...etc

it would help if you can let me know what exactly that you are trying to accomplished when syncing ... that way I'll have an idea and can suggest the alternatives ...

some are free ... others might not be

here is just ONE example as an alternative:
http://www.mydocsunlimited.com/html/mightysync.html

and also check out this alternative:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=88439

~~~ here's a quote from the requirement to use activesync~~~
• Microsoft® Outlook® 2000, Microsoft ®Outlook® XP, or Microsoft® Outlook® 2003 messaging and collaboration clients required for synchronization to the desktop or portable computer of e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes.
so .. like I've said ... if you don't use outlook as a source for your ( e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes.) ... then ... it is NOT required !!!
I should have been clearer... because now I'm terribly confused. The only modules I need to sync are contacts, tasks, and calendar. I don't need to sync email.
So, am I correct in assuming that Outlook is my only way to do this??? What about Essential PIM? Has anyone used that? http://www.essentialpim.com/
Actually if you don't have wm5 then essential pim looks like it will work.
Not sure I see the point in avoiding all things microsoft, unless you are moving to a penguin powered machine, but hey if it makes you happy then let us know how you get on
Of course, if you're avoiding all things Microsoft, you could've bought a Palm Pilot instead...
Actually, yes, I am. I have Ubuntu Linux dual booted on my laptop. I'm so close to dumping the M$ all together (minus the Axim).... Yeah, I've just installed Essential PIM PPC Edition. I haven't used it yet, but will make a full report!
Actually you will have to use Microsoft Active Sync. I dont think you can make any good use of a Wm5 Pocket PC without using Microsoft Software.
Kelley, why not get a good backup program like Sprite, and avoid syncing altogether?
