Welcome to Aximsite!

Just do a hard reset to revert back to factory state. Hold down the power button while doing a soft reset (stylus into the reset hole at the back).

Yes I do that. But I'm wondering if it's possible to reinstall windows 2003 on the rom cartrige? So I can do some customizations in the meantime also... :)

Anything is _possible_. But in this case, it isn't really practical. What exactly were you hoping to change?

Some basic settings inside windows mobile 2003 if possible.
Add in my own software that I frequently use so I don't have to reinstall.
And remove the crap that comes with operating system. Useless things like windows media player.

So that any time that I do a hard reset... I don't have to spend all that time setting up software and changing my setting just the way I like it. Just do a reset and BAM! Everything is just the way I need it.

It's not possible to remove any programs that already came preinstalled because it is part of the ROM. However, if you want to save time after a hard reset, just make a backup when you have your device the way you want it. You can use the built-in utility on the device itself, the utility on Activesync (only versions 3.x unfortunately) or a third party utility such as Sprite Backup or Spb Backup. One of the advantages of third party utilities include a self-executing restore file; basically, you tap on the .exe and your device is restored without the need for connection to a PC. Just make sure you save your .exe in a location that is not touched by a hard reset (e.g., storage card or BIS).

It is possible to write to ROM... just like the update Utility by Dell does it.

Now how could I go about making my own "ROM Update" and then use the Dell utility to install it?

I notice that the Utility uses .img files that contain the entire rom to write to the Axim.

Maybe this could be personalized?

Well, brucevangeorge has a point though...for the average user, it's not possible to remove anything from the ROM. However, for the more skilled, it IS possible to hack the ROM, etc. This obviously involves an element of risk as well as licencing issues, which of course leads to the question of legality and so on...

Personally, i don't have a problem with the "legality". It's my PDA. I bought it and if I want to do something like drop it into a vat of acid or run it over with my car... I have every right to do so. As does everyone else here. Sharing the hacks and so on... that's another issue.

So how does this ROM hacking happen? And what kind of tools are available?

Also. How do the guys at dell make the roms in the first place?
