Rollie has updated his post re the availability of the upgrade.

http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportf...essage.id=3982

Seems that anyone within the 30 day period in the US will get a free upgrade. If you're in the 30 day period outside the US, he suggests calling Customer Care or Sales.

Everybody else will need to buy the upgrade.

Wait I'm confused... I should be entitled to a free upgrade but I called the phone number and extension but some lady gave me a case number.??? Does that mean I'm getting it or was she putting me up to get help?

Hmm Dell PPC2K3 free upgrade

I just spoke with customer care, sales, then customer care AND sales. I was told that Dell will not start taking the orders for the (free) upgrades until July 15. I was then given a case number, and told to call back on the 15th. When I asked why others had been allowed to order, I was told that other reps that were uninformed of the (current) official guidelines to this release have placed orders for individuals using the fee-based upgrade. I was also told that nobody that ordered with the pay-based upgrade part number would receive it without paying for it. The free upgrade is not available yet. On the upside, It was inferred that the free upgrades would be shipped first. I"m not quite sure what to believe. I personally think that too many dell employees / managers / management are smoking crack.

My faith in Dell has been restored!

After several phone calls with Dell earlier in the week, where they insisted that there was no free upgrade for recently purchased Axims, I received a phone call from the first woman in customer care whom I spoke with. She told me that she was wrong (the policy had not been made clear by Dell when we had spoken)--there really is a free upgrade and it will be sent out to me (she gave a date of July 15).

what ever happen to the free world?

Dell as it is, is already making huge profits selling their hardware and software to the governmental/school sectors. I believe they ought to make it a freeware for the Dell Axim owners. Not everyone can afford to spend $30-36 for a piece of OS software. :D

HP/Compaq is charging the same $$ for the upgrade, unless you bought your PPC after May 30th...then it's free.

So let me get this straight. Dell should give away something it costs them money to produce, package and ship because "not everyone can afford it? Dell is a business. They need to make a profit and have done well by charging reasonable prices for a good product. Just because they make money doesn't mean they should give it away to you.

Now wait a minute here.

Microsoft gave all their OS upgrades away for the PC - Win95 to ME to 2000 to XP, every time a free download, but of course they did go bankrupt

Whoops - I see Bobby Ewing - It was all a dream - back to reality

a) it'll be full of bugs anyway (it's MS after all), b) you've got a whole month to save up your pocket money to get it, c) you've got PPC2002 - 2003 is either 1) the best thing since sliced bread - therefore worth the money, or 2) just a small add on of some bug fixes and some nice new features - therefore you can wait even longer and save up even more pocket money (and of course by that time the first patches will be out and it won't mess up your PPC)

Reality check time - less hysteria more contemplation = less stress

Nick

One question:
I ordered my Dell Axim the first week of June. Then I can have a free upgrade. Is there a limit for a date when I should place my order for the upgrade?(Someone said a month?)
I bought it at dell.com. Got it sent to a friend in the US.
I dont want him to call.I live in Spain and I dont want to call so expensive if it takes 20 minutes :) Wouldnt be a free upgrade :)
So I am waiting for them to put a link in ther site as long as someone said the updates wont be available till 15th June.
Do someone knows an email address to ask for the free upgrade?
Thanks
