Hey I called Dell. They said that I qualified for the free upgrade 2002 to 2003. I asked if it could be downloaded they said that it would be a kit. They also said that it was going to take a few days that I should call then. I bought my Axim a about two weeks ago so I assume that it is a 30 day deal.
I hope that this helps.
I bought mine 5 days ago, it came with 2002, I called Dell and spoke to someone at Customer Care who said I would have to buy it, then they might be able to re-imburse me... If you get any more news on a download, please let us know.
If I had only waited 1 day to order, it would have been shipped on Monday, with 2003, instead of Friday with 2002...
from what ive read (unoffical) that they will update people that ordered in the last 30 days. Again I havent heard this first hand yet

Your best bet would be wait a week for all the dell employees to get their memos and all the press releases to come out then call dell up and ask them

I am in the same boat...
Looks like my Axim 5 ran out the door on Friday, as well at
8:00AM!! HMPH!
I hope I will be able to receive a FREE Upgrade if they make it avail, OR, I my REFUSE it and reorder.. More than one way to skin their Kat, huh?
ANyway, I will watch very closely the next day or two, and see how it goes!
don't refuse delivery of your new Ax, it may take a very long time for the unit to get back to Dell and get credited to your account. I'd hate for you to be out of an Ax for awhile. It would be easiest to take delivery then call customer care and get the upgrade. If they say that they have to charge you, tell them that you want to return it. They will make arrangements for shipping labels to get to you and you can send it in, then order a new one.
Same goes for everyone within the 30 day window. Just call cust. care and tell them you want to return/exchange your unit for one with mobile 2003. They'll probably send the kit to you before actually doing an exchange.
They should have just dropped the ax price an extra 30 dollars for the last month and this wouldn't be any big deal. People who just purchased wouldn't feel shorted, they would get the same deal as new buyers are by now having to buy the disks, total cost is the same and Dell would save themselves from having to produce a bunch of refurbs from returns.
In this support forum of dell some guy , rollie , wrote this:
"All Axims purchased after May 23, 2003 will be eligible for a free upgrade to Pocket PC 2003. Anyone who purchased an Axim prior to that date will need to purchase Pocket PC 2003 in order to upgrade"
I will watch for the Update info. I am checking on another Axim 5 purchased, and hopefully it was after May 23rd... Might be very short order, but hopefully... I pressed one of my people to order one, and they did! LOL Go Figure!
I just called Dell. After my 4th person and being passed around "like a pack of Marlbourgh's at a penitentiary" I finally got a good customer care person. Since I bought my Axium on May 30th, I qualify for a free Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade
1. First of all you need to go through Dell Customer Care. Don't get passed to tech support, sales, etc.
2. Have your customer number or service tag number ready.
3. Tell them you qualify for the free upgrade. If they start to give you grief, tell them to do a search.
4. The part number is 310-4214, if they can't find it for you.
5. Get an 8 digit reference number from them. That shows that you are being processed.
6. They will send it to be processed.
7. Give it a few days and they said you should be able to see it on the order status area of the Dell Website.

There are two secrets to my success:
Bought mine on May 23. Dell guy first denied any such upgrade program existed. When I insisted he check, he came back and said that there was no program, but that they were allowing a 30-day window for the non-existent program. He also told me I'd missed the window by one day, but as a "Customer Care" issue, they would order the part for me (when I gave the part number). I tried to muddle my way through the doublespeak again, but it made no sense the second time either. I gave up trying to understand it because I got what I wanted.
Bottom line, Dell has made me happy again, so who's to complain?
