Hey I called Dell. They said that I qualified for the free upgrade 2002 to 2003. I asked if it could be downloaded they said that it would be a kit. They also said that it was going to take a few days that I should call then. I bought my Axim a about two weeks ago so I assume that it is a 30 day deal.
I hope that this helps.
I bought mine 5 days ago, it came with 2002, I called Dell and spoke to someone at Customer Care who said I would have to buy it, then they might be able to re-imburse me... If you get any more news on a download, please let us know.
If I had only waited 1 day to order, it would have been shipped on Monday, with 2003, instead of Friday with 2002...
from what ive read (unoffical) that they will update people that ordered in the last 30 days. Again I havent heard this first hand yet

Your best bet would be wait a week for all the dell employees to get their memos and all the press releases to come out then call dell up and ask them

I am in the same boat...
Looks like my Axim 5 ran out the door on Friday, as well at
8:00AM!! HMPH!
I hope I will be able to receive a FREE Upgrade if they make it avail, OR, I my REFUSE it and reorder.. More than one way to skin their Kat, huh?
ANyway, I will watch very closely the next day or two, and see how it goes!
don't refuse delivery of your new Ax, it may take a very long time for the unit to get back to Dell and get credited to your account. I'd hate for you to be out of an Ax for awhile. It would be easiest to take delivery then call customer care and get the upgrade. If they say that they have to charge you, tell them that you want to return it. They will make arrangements for shipping labels to get to you and you can send it in, then order a new one.
Same goes for everyone within the 30 day window. Just call cust. care and tell them you want to return/exchange your unit for one with mobile 2003. They'll probably send the kit to you before actually doing an exchange.
They should have just dropped the ax price an extra 30 dollars for the last month and this wouldn't be any big deal. People who just purchased wouldn't feel shorted, they would get the same deal as new buyers are by now having to buy the disks, total cost is the same and Dell would save themselves from having to produce a bunch of refurbs from returns.
In this support forum of dell some guy , rollie , wrote this:
"All Axims purchased after May 23, 2003 will be eligible for a free upgrade to Pocket PC 2003. Anyone who purchased an Axim prior to that date will need to purchase Pocket PC 2003 in order to upgrade"
I will watch for the Update info. I am checking on another Axim 5 purchased, and hopefully it was after May 23rd... Might be very short order, but hopefully... I pressed one of my people to order one, and they did! LOL Go Figure!
I just called Dell. After my 4th person and being passed around "like a pack of Marlbourgh's at a penitentiary" I finally got a good customer care person. Since I bought my Axium on May 30th, I qualify for a free Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade
1. First of all you need to go through Dell Customer Care. Don't get passed to tech support, sales, etc.
2. Have your customer number or service tag number ready.
3. Tell them you qualify for the free upgrade. If they start to give you grief, tell them to do a search.
4. The part number is 310-4214, if they can't find it for you.
5. Get an 8 digit reference number from them. That shows that you are being processed.
6. They will send it to be processed.
7. Give it a few days and they said you should be able to see it on the order status area of the Dell Website.

There are two secrets to my success:
Bought mine on May 23. Dell guy first denied any such upgrade program existed. When I insisted he check, he came back and said that there was no program, but that they were allowing a 30-day window for the non-existent program. He also told me I'd missed the window by one day, but as a "Customer Care" issue, they would order the part for me (when I gave the part number). I tried to muddle my way through the doublespeak again, but it made no sense the second time either. I gave up trying to understand it because I got what I wanted.
Bottom line, Dell has made me happy again, so who's to complain?
I followed Michael's instructions, played the same shell game and got my free upgrade. No mention of it being an official plan or not, but it should have been made a little clearer than mud up front, oh well. I won't judge their motives, at least out loud.
I got mine towards the end of April. Does this mean if I call Dell and make a big enough stink, they'll send me an upgrade free? :)
Seriously, I do feel a little gyp'd, but $30 isn't too bad considering I bought a refurb'd unit and paid a lot less than even the currently excellent prices for new...
Not that I'm complaining about the $30, but has anyone else considerred sending their older unit in for a defect replacement??? I've been holding out on a replacement because of the D-pad and also the one corner of my screen seems to move if I push on it enough. I understand that there is a good possibility that I'd get a refurb unit, but I'm willing to risk it just to get the C1 processor also. What does everyone think Dell is doing with refurbs, are they upgrading them or will they come with the original OS?? I'm talking about purchasing a refurb......will it have the new OS or original? Just something to consider. I think I'll wait a while before I do anything, I'm sure Dell customer care is going to be crazy for a few weeks. I'd just really like to be able to utilize the processor that I paid for.

man i thought i was quite subtle with that one. i think this forum might be to straight laced for me but thanks for the friendly moderation rather than a heavier handed approach.
I just called and got my upgrade order placed, so I should know the status soon. Here's the number and extension that you want
1-877-773-3355 x66966
The CSR that answered my call had to put me on hold twice to check about the upgrade, but he was pretty helpful. Once people start calling things should move quicker.
I first used an extension listed in another post (x62470), and it sent me to sales. I thought I was at Customer Care so I started placing my order, but before everything went through I checked to make sure it was a no charge. She said for that I needed Customer Care and gave me the extension. Make sure you check that you're at Customer Care or else you may be paying for your upgrade without knowing it (via Sales).
Finally, the Sales CSR said that they were backordered and the CD would ship around late July. After placing my order with Customer Care at no charge he said the CD may even ship tomorrow. I guess the CDs are "backordered" so that all the May 23 - June 23 Axims get their orders first.

*This may be incorrect, but I'm just reporting what I can infer from the statements made on the phone.
After nearly 40 minutes this morning with dell after being passed around from each department
A Irish sales bloke told me that I WILL have to pay for it :( I did tell him about the rep in the dell forums saying that it will be free but he was having none of it :crooked:
Update: I checked my order status and here's what it shows:
Date of Purchase:06/24/2003
Estimated Ship Date:on or before 07/28/2003
Also the order shows like I placed it through sales even though it is a no charge, so don't be alarmed if you see a price listed on the Order Status. As long as you go through Customer Care you'll be set.
Sub-Total $29.00
Shipping $5.50
Tax $2.84
Total Price $37.34

Same way with me. I just checked my order status and it shows this:
I am within my 30 days period (bought May 30th) so my upgrade is N/C
Delivery Estimate: July 30 - August 1
Status as of Tuesday, June 24, 2003 11:15:19 AM Central Time
1. Order Processing: Monday, June 23, 2003
2. Pre-production: Monday, June 23, 2003
4. Shipping Prep: Friday, July 25, 2003
5. Estimated Ship Date: Friday, July 25, 2003
It shows a charge of $34.50, but they do not have credit card authorization. So I can't be charged

I saw that charge and called back. They explained that it's just a machine thing. Same story, no way to charge me without authorization. She said ignore it.
On the phone with them now---I've had to explain it like 4 times already---now I'm on hold! If anyone gets the name of someone who knows what's going on, and an extension, I'd REALLY appreciate it!
It's almost like they don't know what's going on!?!?!
