How To Order Windows Mobile 2003 Upgrade

I ordered the upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 from Dell at 1-800-449-3355. Punch through the menus until you reach Dell Accesories. Just ask for the Windows Mobile 2003 Upgrade Kit. The part number is 310-4214 (PPC2K3 UPGRADE KIT,ENG). Expected shipping is within three to four weeks. The price quoted to me was $29.00 + tax and shipping.

SKU: 310-4214
Description: Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade for Del[l Axim]

So you can all call in and order. The wait was about five minutes (not as bad as the wait for the software!).

Good luck!!

Upgrade Upgrade??

OK, so this is an "Upgrade Kit". Does anyone know or care to speculate about what this "Upgrade" will mean to installed software on our Axims? Do you feel it will install over 2002, finding and keeping third party software (along with contacts, calendars, etc)??

Sure I would do a complete backup before upgrading. But it would be nice to not have to find and reinstall my other software......

I'm 99.9999% sure that it will be just a ROM upgrade (similar to all other ROM upgrades like A02, A03, etc.). I'm not sure, however, about a backup working since it will be an entirely new OS. I for one plan to start from scratch. A backup MIGHT work, but then again, nobody will know for sure until they try it I guess. :)

Well, that is not what I really meant.....

In the past, UPGRADES of Windows would find your Windows software and keep it installed. Just wondering if this would work the same......

Well, with PPCs it works a little differently. Upgrades are usually not the same as they are on a PC. Upgrading the ROM (which OS is stored on) has in the past always completely erased the ROM and then written the new image (in this case, containing MM2003) to the now blank ROM. With PPC2002 A00 to A02 upgrades (and others similar), you could restore your files after this as long as you had a backup. But I'm not 100% sure if you will be able to do this since it is an ENTIRELY different OS on the system after this upgrade.

I ordered my upgrade today and wasl told it should ship before July 22, 2003. Use this extension so you won't have to wonder through the menu's on Dell's phone system like I did:

Extension: 62470

Since the time difference between ordering now and waiting to order until I see my fellow Aximsite members play with the upgrade for a few days probably puts back me having the kit in my hands about another week, I think I will wait and see.......

Good luck people! Keep posting.......

I'm sure that Microsoft will have to come up with fixes the first few months after its release. I will keep on this site to see how upgrades go. But really looking forward to using the new OS.

First, Thank you all for being most informative and helpful. Special Thanks to Jetski for the extension.

Second, to thefo, If you have an English Axim, couldn't you just order the same upgrade?

Thefo,

I called Dell Canada and they said that there is some sort of configuration issue and that it will be about two weeks before a Canadian part number is even available for ordering the upgrade. I even asked about ordering from the States and he said that Dell US would not ship to a Canadian address....sigh.

I know I will just watch and see how everyone here does with it. I am not sure that I understand exactly what it will do for me. I would like to connect to the internet with my Axim-will this make it easier? I am not to knowledgable on this subject yet.
