How did Compaq or HP handle things after 2002 was released? Did they issue updated Roms for 2002?
If I remember correctly Compaq had set it up as a free download for all ipaq User's except for ones who have the H3600 series who had to pay for the upgrade.

the ROM updates are the same thing as a bios flash.
i would assume the ROM updates for PPC2002 wouldnt work on PPC2003 and any ROM updates for PPC 2003 wouldn't work for PPC2002.

The Rom update and OS are 2 seperate things and I don't think their is a seperate version for 2002 and 2003, but with that said it may be a requirement to be at a specific level(A03) in order to upgrade to 2003.

I beg to differ (as politely as possible, of course).
ROM update packages are so large because they contain the entire operating system. The ROM on your Axim is completely erased and rebuilt from the image in the update when the installer is run.
As such, the A03 update (for example) contains the entire PocketPC 2002 operating system for the Axim, some of which has been changed since version A02.
Any update that is released as an update to Mobile Windows 2003 (B01, maybe?) would contain the entire Mobile Windows 2003 operating system, some of which would be changed from the original MW2003 upgrade CD.
Even if Dell limited the download to only those with the new operating system (according to their records), the file could eventually get into the hands of anyone who really wanted it.
That's why the installer application would need some way of checking your ROM prior to the installation to ensure that you already have the MW2003 Upgrade installed. Otherwise, you'd have it for free once your ROM update was complete.
I'm sure Dell and Microsoft already have a plan and we won't find out until the first update is released. I'm just interested to see what it is.

I stand corrected you are right that is the way they bundle it even though they don't have to. But how else can they keep us under control.
thanks for correcting my statement

And microsoft usually has a CD-key ID number that you need to use as validation. I'm thinking they will do that like they do with MS WIN, MS Office, etc.

It will have to be some sort of detection scheme, AFAIK. Users whose Axim came pre-installed with 2003 won't have the upgrade CD-ROM, but they will still need the updates. Even if it would also accept the bundled ActiveSync disc, I'd hate to have my ability to update my Axim eliminated because I lost the CD-ROM. Arrrrgh.
Originally posted by stu so if the ROM updates the OS.. wheres the point in doing the backup for all data as this backups the \windows directory and replaces it afterwards..
The backup only restores the PIM data....and all programs that were previously installed. The updates are not defaulted back to the prior in any way.

What about folks that have 2002 and call in for a warranty replacement, will they get a 2003 unit? If you purchase the advance replacement warranty they don't have the ability to look at your unit first to tell what version you are running.
They DO have some kind of validation,
I know the first English A02 rom update
wouldnt work on guy's pda in Italy.. he
wanted to replace his italian rom with
an english version, and tried the english
rom update, and it said it cant be installed
on his device.
