Please share it because I'm trying to go back to the 2002 version since the 2003 version is really slow on my advanced model. I made a rom backup but now I cannot restore it because it gives a language error problem. In the readme I could not found the article that you FIRST have to change your regional settings on the Dell to US English BEFORE you backup the rom file, because mine is in DUTCH !
I tried to make a backup rom from my wife's dell basic model and tried to restore that to the advanced model but then I get some kind of error about the image file that it did not pass the verify-action running before you can restore it, so it did not pass the verify and I could not restore it. Maybe it has something to do with the difference between the basic an advanced model?
So somebody else have another idea how to go back from WM2003 (A05) to PPC2002 (A02, which was running good) ????
Please help me! :rolling:

Unfortunately, I have not had anyway to to a good testing, so I am afraid I can't provide instructions. I thought I would have some info by now, but I haven't had enough data coming in to write usable information. Sorry.
Also, I honestly do not want to be in violation of forum rules on this or any other issue, so I would not post it in these forums unless I was sure it was acceptable. This is moot anyway because I have not had enough opportunities to investigate it further.

Since you are a licensed for 2002 and 2003, I don't there see any problem in trying to get you back to a version you are fully licensed to use.
You can't load the image from a Basic onto the advanced, and vice versa. I'm pretty handy with a hex editor, and I can't get it to work.
But... seems like the following would be a possibility...
1) Download the A03 patch from the Dell web site. This is fully working 2002 image.
2) Use winzip or winwar or the equivalent to extract the image file for the Advanced. It's the one with the H in it, versus L.
3) Rename the image file from .IMG to .RIS. This will make it appear to be the backup that was extracted from your Axim when you upgraded to 2003.
4) Use the restore tool that came with the 2003 loader, when it asks for the backup, select the .RIS file you just created.
I have not done this... but I know this process has been successful for others.

I had been thinking the same thing before, but I had not had the Axims or the images to verify. Have people actually had sucess with it? If so, bravo... good job! You may have solved a problem I know several would like solved.

So far as I know... but I don't take anything as Gospel until I try it myself. I don't have 2003, so I haven't.

Thanks Nathan, I'll try this asap to see if it works. When I want to restore a basic image file back to the adv. model, it gives an error saying that the integrity from the image cannot be guranteed/checked so I cannot continue. This is a image from a basic model with rom version a02.
I'll keep you posted if the solution you gave worked!

Be careful, there is a bad patch file running around places like eDonkey. It is apparently making corrupt backups of the ROM.
I know this from trying to help someone downgrade a few days ago...

I have the original CD's from Dell containing WM2003 so I don't need to worry about that patch file...., or do I?

This process isn't going to work because you will keep getting an error about the integrity of the file unless you use a hex editor on the ao3 patch off of dell's site.

The only time I heard of the installer complaining about the integrity of the file was from patches that came from sources other than Dell. I suspect those were corrupt patches.
If editing is what is needed, the Restore should be telling you it was not from that device.
I can post what I know and guess about the process here if a moderator will allow me to post such info. I would be glad to post the recipe I thought would work.
If I get a green light to do so, with a confirmation that my posts will be edited without getting me in Admin trouble if I post something that is in volation of forum ruled, then I will post.
I don't know if the information will help, but it might save people some time.
Just let me know.

If you have the WM03 CD from Dell, you don't need the A02 or A03 upgrades - those are PPC02.

Can't downgrade to 2002 .....
Hello guys,
I tried the 2 suggestions that were posted in this thread but they both don't work......
Option 1 was to rename a .IMG-file from a A03 rom update to a .RIS-file and then restore it with the Backup/Restore utility from Dell's WM2003 cd. I got an error saying that this backup file is not from my Dell Axim Adv. so that didn't help....
Option 2 was to use a hex editor to copy the UUID from a freshly made A05 backup file (hard reset and then a backup) into a A03 .IMG-file and save it as a .RIS-file. Trouble comes up again telling me that this image is not from this Dell Axim...
So I hope somebody who's reading this can give me some more tips to try to go back from WM2003 (A05) to PPC2002 (A03, I tried also A02 giving me the same error message).
I'm not quite sure if I used the hex-editor right (when copying the 106 to 128 decimal area) I think it only contains the UUID and nothing more. I used Hex Workshop 4.1
Hopefully somebody has the answer to this issue!? Please help!!
Antwan.

YES I'M BACK AT PPC2002
Thank God, or actually JmE for his GREAT HELP!
JmE borrowed his PPC2002 A03 ROM image (which was backed-up in US English ;) ). I copied, with a Hex Editor 106-128 from my A05 ROM image to his A03 image and finally I could restore my Dell Axim Advanced back from WM2003 to PPC2002. Many many many thanks to JmE again. This guy knows what he is doing and he was really helpful and willing! These guys should go and work at Dell to support their customers with these problems!
John, I can't say it enough, thank you very very much for your help and time! You're the best!
