Microsoft, you gotta love em. The world is their beta tester! At least Dell provides top notch support - oh sorry, wrong reality :crooked:

You might as well wait. It's not shipping until the end of the month and you won't be charged until then anyway. See what happens.

Perhaps this is a story that The New York Times or the Wall Street Journal would be interested in? :D

I can tell you affirmatively that the press is aware of this issue and that representatives of Dell are aware that the press is aware and that an official statement will be forthcoming.
Until that time we will be conducting our own tests to confirm/deny the performance issues being reported with the Axim X5.
One other point of note, you can stop referring to PocketPC 2003 as "Windows Mobile 2003". Windows Mobile is nothing more than a marketing slogan coined at Microsoft to cover PocketPC and Smartphone under one umbrella, but has nothing to do with CE.Net, TabletPC or other mobile platforms at Microsoft. Do you remember the slogan "Windows Powered"? Same thing another dead-end markting campaign designed to fool would be buyers.
Call it what it is, PocketPC 2003 or PocketPC 2002 Service Pack 1.
Our early performance testing showed a clear indication that a Toshiba e755 browsing to WindowsMedia.com's mobile site for PocketPC was able to render the page 3 seconds faster than a Dell Axim X5 running PocketPC 2003, the Toshiba is running PPC02. This isn't a comparison between Axim models, that will be done later today, but we thought it was noteworthy to mention.
Video playback streaming over 802.11 was the same on either the Toshiba or Dell devices.

Apologies, in that last test the Toshiba was set at 400mhz, so turning it down to 200mhz yielded only marginally better performance than the Dell Axim X5, less than 1/2 second difference. An argument for a faster processor for browsing at least.

Slow Axim problem is on the press !!
Well, hopefully now Dell will fix this issue like Palm did a few years ago with the cracked cases on the Palm IIIc, back then I was also quoted on news.com by a Bloomberg correspondent.

In that article it states that the Dell Axim has a 400mhz processor, yet the one we have here for testing is a 200mhz processor, why the difference?

BTW, I just got off the phone with my contact over at Dell and she stated that they've found the problem and have a fix for it and that management is meeting this afternoon to discuss how best to distribute the fix. Looks like a solution was found and more information will be forthcoming soon.

axims come in either 300mhz or 400mhz versions. the 200mhz you're reffering to is running in power save mode.

great! I guess we'll all believe it when we see it's actually fixed. good to know they're taking some iniative to get this fixed. they should have, however, informed all of their client support staff of the problem as soon as they found out. seems that, even though management (and engineers/developers) know about it, alot of the tech support doesn't.
