Windows Media and Telnet

Is it possible for Pocket Windows Media Player to find and play songs that I have stored in a Unix server via Telnet?

Is Terminal Services Client only for Windows 2000/XP? Can it utilize telnet also?

Um, maybe I am missing something you want windows media to download songs over telnet? Or are you talking about the list of songs?

The list is possible if you can do some programming, the other is not.

As far as terminal services I would bet it's only for windows.

Sorry this isn't what you wanted to hear.

Terminal Services is only available on Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP Professional. Not UNIX. You can use VNC to connect to UNIX though. You can also download a telnet client that would allow you to connect. I have no idea though how you would use Pocket WMP to search the UNIX network unless you use SAMBA....

You could map a drive to the unix box thru Samba and then play your songs. You can take control of the machine using VNC. I would recommend ssh over telnet. Telnet is insecure! With ssh, you can view the files on the box.

Could you describe VNC, Samba, and ssh?

If I map to a Unix box on PPC and it shows on the tree, will that functionality be available for any application that wants me to look for a file?

VNC - Allows you to take control of another computer. Check out some info here.

SAMBA - Allows you to map UNIX drives on your PC (among other things). Get info here.

SSH - is basically a security for Telnet and other apps. Without SSH, anyone can read your telnet session.

But is there anything for Pocket PC??

The sites you gave me are for Windows desktops. I need them for my PDA.

Once you have Samba configured correctly on unix, then mapping a drive on your ppc is the same as you would to a windows box(\\machine_name\folder). Here is a link to a ppc ssh program.

there's a pocketpc client version of vnc that you can run on your axim to connect to your desktop. samba needs to be installed on your linux box in order for windows filesystems to see it.

What about a direct Pocket PC to Unix folder connection?

I'm trying to connect to my campus' Unix box because that where I've been given alloted space to store my files.

Would I have to make a Unix folder connection to my Windows Desktop and then try to share it so PPC can view it?

Has anybody here ever tried this?

Do I use "Web Folders" on the Windows desktop to make the connection to my Unix folder?

You could FTP to and from your Unix box. Or use SAMBA, which I think was mentioned above.

Uh didn't you read what we posted? Use SAMBA on the UNIX to allow the Axim to connect to it. What don't you understand?
