WM 2003 Not So Bad?
Hi All,
I just read the thread above about Dell Tech support saying a fix will be available soon for the 2003 issue. But I have to say, my brand new Axim, which I just got today :) is not going as slow as some people's are. While timing with a stopwatch, the initial bootup of my unit took almost 10 seconds, a soft reset takes approx 3.5 seconds and to come out of sleep mode is almost instant, less than .5 of a sec. Also, all apps load instantly except for Dell's own home app, it took about 1.5 secs to load.
Also, from the time I push the record button until the time I hear the beep is 1.5 secs. I will try loading some other apps on here and see what else I can uncover, with speeds of other applications and games.
So breath a sigh of relief all you new Axim users, because either I got a gem of a unit, or something is starting to work better. That is unless these times are considered 'slow' compared to the PPC 2002 Axims.
BTW, mine is the 300MHz model, and it says it's running Rom A04 release. Is that the one it should be?

Ok, thanks. And I did forget to mention one downfall...the Start menu does take quite a while to come up, almost a full second, and that can be very annoying. But all the other menus like the Task Switcher are instant.

Try reading an eBook or playing a movie with Windows Media and tell me it's not slow.

Alright,
I tried a couple things. Jimmysoftware's doom runs perfectly, the only thing I noticed was a slight sound lag, but it was running at full fps.
Then, I coppied the video that comes with Windows Movie Maker over to my Axim and opened it from File Explorer. It took exactly 2 seconds to open and start playing. Once playing, it didn't stutter at all, and I didn't see any pauses in the video either.

Consider yourself fortunate then. You're one of the lucky few.

I'm testing my Axim Advanced w/WM2K3...
WMV playback is smooth. The UI performance is very erratic. When ActiveSync attempts to connect it is so bad that the dialog box on the Axim doesn't even fully get drawn.
Some games, like LEDHead take 15 seconds to fully draw the screen... and it took about 6 to close.
This is really ugly. I'm going to test it more thoroughly and call it in to support. :( Shame too, this device looks so much nicer than my Maestro.

I ripped the Matrix and I could tell it was dropping frames within the first few minutes where nothing much is happening.
I've also gotten weird shadows of images in place after the screen has changed. That shows up in Jawbreaker where you'll see part of a globe still in an area, but it's not really there.
I called tech support today and they blamed it on low memory. Doesn't make much sense as I have very little installed on it right now. Plus they denied that there was a problem when I asked about it.
I sent an email to a few news sites, hoping they'll look into what the deal is.
Super

Wow! I'm getting the 300 MHz one too. Man! That is quite fast, I think. Could the 300MHz ones work better than the 400? Because I haven't heard a "slow" from someone with the 300. Just a thought. heh. heh...

Oh and I just emailed Dell about this crisis and they happily replied that the patch should be ready within 15 days. They are just waiting for Microsoft to give them their patch (perhaps SP1) of Win Mobile 03.

Good to hear that a patch will be available within that time.
Question is, how many people are going to be willing to wait around that long before jumping ship? Well, at least of those who just bought them anyway.

That is good news. If a fix is in my hands within 2 weeks, then I'm willing to wait. I can tell that if the problems with WM2K3 are corrected, then this is going to be a great little device.
The other problem I have with my Axim is that the D-Pad is spongy/mushy in the north and east directions... the south and west are fine and have a tactile click. I've emailed them about both problems but have yet to get a response.

Wahoo!
Both the Register and the Inquirer are looking into this. The Inquirer has it on this morning's news!

Has anyone found out on Dell's website that the problem exists or is Dell trying to block it out so new Axim buyers don't change their minds?
