Question 2003 vs 2002

Hi All, total newbie here!:crooked:

I have finally decided to get with it and get an Axim (first PDA). I have found a couple used ones available with MS 2002 OS. Are the diffs between 02/03 enough that I should worry about getting or buying with 03? And will 03 be available as an upgrade later (assuming Dell fixes things)? Any good advice appreciated! Thanks.

It would probably be a good idea to wait a few weeks to see where the '03 thing is going with Dell. If they announce the problem atleast that's a start in the right direction. If that happens I'd suggest going with a new '03 from Dell. If you don't want to or can't wait go with the '02. You'll always be able to buy the '03 upgrade from Dell.

I own one of the problemsome Axims with PPC2003. Looking beyond the problems, I can see that once Dell fixes it, an Axim equipped with 2003 is going to be a great performer.

If you can get a great price on a used one, then sure, get it with 2002 and then you can purchase the upgrade if it proves to be as good as some of us think it will be.

I would hold off ordering a new one with 2003. I don't see the benefit of doing that.

i would get 2003, it looks like it will get fixxed now. But if you can wait a week for the patch to be out... i would do that

so wait... if you wont, then get 2003... its not SOOO bad, and as long as it gets fixxed itll be cool

I would not get a unit with 2K3 installed. It performs so much worse than the 2K2 Axims. Dell is making an upgrade available for the 2K2 Axims. I would get the 2K2 and then get the upgrade when it is available-providing Dell has actually taken care of the performance problems.

hmm , is there any way to back up 2003 then so that when this new update becomes available for it i can use 2003 again :D

update:: actually nah, i'll keep 2003, its not that bad, its a small bit slower but its not worth the hassle converting back to 2002 or anything

thanks for your help

A03 won't flash to those Axims with WM2003. The loader doesn't recognize them as acceptable devices.

Personally, I'd rather have the option of flashing 2002 on it now... get it usable and functioning and give me an opportunity to really shake it down before my 30 days are up. If the performance is acceptable, then I'd be willing to wait for the 2003 fix...whenever that will be released.

Not to mention that 2003 breaks some significant software like NYDITOT.

NYDITOT - screen rotation software used for putting your PPC in landscape orientation. Very useful for browsing the web and for use with keyboards (like my Micro Innovations wireless keyboard)

i got my new Axim Advanced with WM2003 last wednesday.

I have to say it really isnt that bad at all. the start menu is practically as fast as my PPC2002 Axim was, and so is the amount of time it takes for the screen to turn on when you press the power button.

Video? I've watched a whole .avi movie and the little lag that I did get was barely perceptible, in fact I think I got the same lag on my desktop. watched half of an mpeg movie too, no problems.

mp3 playback is basically the same as it was in PPC2002.

It's not fast, that's for sure, but overall my new ax has been pretty good to me. soft resets are more frequent, but not by much. moving data around internally (from RAM to ROM or a memory card) is painstakingly slow, but I rarely need to.

MS reader functions almost as it did in PPC2002. some things take a few seconds to do, like rendering error messages, but actually using the reader is barely any different.

slowdowns seem to occur intermittently, and they can be very annoying. generally though it seems to work OK, and i don't see this as some kind of big ordeal to endure while i wait for two whole weeks (!) for the great big Dell in the sky to finally bestow the WM2003 patch upon us.

on the other hand, I bought my new axim knowing full well that it wouldn't be very impressive til it got fixed. frankly from all the horror stories i was expecting a stone age ppc.

ordered on evening of 7/10/2003, shipped on 7/14/2003, received on 7/16/2003. WM2003 version 4.20.1081, build 13100.

2003 shipped with it is better in the end

Many of you forget that the 2k3 axims have a PXA255 chip when shipped from dell. The chip is so much better than the previous PXA250 in terms of battery life and speed. I think with that in mind any way that you can get your hands on a Axim with the PXA255 chip your doing yourself a favor.

Just my two cents worth.

I think that the slowliness problem with 2003 has to do with some poor memory management, since the problem becomes noticeable when the memory begins to fill, and it is forced to have less ram for the programs. Now that I got my SD, and are installing the stuff on it, it has plenty of memory, and has not slowed down. So maybe there is some Dell app that is slowing down when the opertating system asks for memory. I got it one time to be really tight, and it got almost unuseable. Also I've tried slowing down the CPU to 200 intead of 300, and it doesn't make a difference, it doesn't make it any slower, so it doesn't seem to be a cpu issue.
