2002-2003 but what about 2003-2004?

We've all come to the realization that the step from PPC 2002-MM2003 was rough, because, in my opinion, Dell used cheap parts for the 2002 that couldn't support 2003's demands.
(They traded quality for price.)

In November, it is expected that they will release a new Axim. This new product will probably come with either 2003 or 2004--when it becomes available.

When we get the improved X5 w/ 2003, will some other unseen, less obvious problem cause them to slow down when we move to 2004 next year?

(Will there be a 2004 download or will we need to buy a new Axim?)

2004 will not be available that soon, especially after just releasing WM2003, it is due to be available some time next year.

2004 will probably be out before Dell gets their fix out for 2003. And then we will be in the same spot...2004 won't work on Axims because Dell was to busy getting 2003 to work and didn't spend any time on testing 2004.

2004 is Code-named Magneto. I doubt it will be out by next summer.

Most products have a support period of 3-5 years depending on the manufacturer so theres a good chance that the current axim will be supported if ppc 2004 comes along. The only problem that could occur would be if PDA hardware dramatically changes before then in which case we simply wont be able to run 2004 on current hardware and this is probably a likely outcome with the rate that technology changes.

Great, just what we need, an OS named for an insane Mutant! ( First X-Men movie ). This just keeps getting better & better doesn't it. Well at least if the programs work as well as WM 2003, maybe they will include a self destruct in it? HHHmmmm, I wonder if the extended warranty will cover that? LOL!! :D

I'm not sure that we can safely say that the performance issues with the Axim are because of poor/cheap hardware. I suspect that the most likely culprit is one of the drivers/custom utilities that Dell added into their own release of PPC 2003 that is to blame. This is seems more likely as reports are coming out that the problem has been resolved. Had it been a conflict between the core OS and the Axim it probably would have taken a lot longer to fix as it would then require action from Microsoft.

Well, look at it this way. Like it or not, this is Dell's first handheld unit. Everyone keeps pointing back to the Compaq's... they have been out for a few years (not to mention the combined experience of Compaq and HP). It is really in Dell's hands now to see how the problem is rectified. If it's hardware, it may be a big deal to fix. If it's software only and a patch fixes the problem, nothing is lost except a little time and aggrivation.

If it is hardware, I'm curious to see how long it will take Dell to release a new model and just how much it will cost....

What evidence is there that cheap hardware is causing the M2003 problems? If that were the case, how would they be able to fix the problem with software??? Let's use a little logic here!

That sounds like a wild accusation. Software is complicated enough without looking for off-the-wall explanations for a bug.

As far as any potential problems with the next Axim upgrade, that's pure fantasy. Next time, it could be the HP that has a big problem.

Those of us who've lived through a couple of generations of PDA have a little more perspective. You should have tried an early iPaq with the dust problem, bad pixels, digitizer problems, etc. The Dell has been a dream by comparison. This has been the first major glitch and it looks like it's fixable.
