Dont be in a rush for PPC 2003!!
OK i too was looking forward to recieving my upgrade CD but now im not too fussed, today i had the opportunity to play with my m8's ipaq 5550 and was less than impressed with the "new" features of 03.
The picture program is ok but theres better out there, the new game is fun but hardly worth the effort, and the only real speed difference i noticed was with pocket ie which seemed to load pages alot quicker.
Bear in mind that the 5550 has 128mb of ram and a 255 processor on a 200mhz bus so should scream along compared to my old 250 processor and 100mhz bus but you know it didnt.
So for all those moaning at the delays with 03 just sit back relax and enjoy your lovely working ppc2002 axim and be very wary of upgrading unless you have a real need, by all means get the upgrade just for future proofing when all support for 2002 has dissappeared but dont rush to upgrade just to have the latest greatest OS, stick with working wireless cards and pocket mvp and all other programs that arent compatible with 03 yet i know i am!

I just got in an AXIM A5 400MHz with PPC2003. This was a replacement for my wife's AXIM A5 400MHz with PPC2002 that I got her last December, but was recently stolen. She uses it mainly for PIM stuff and listening to MP3s.
The PPC2003 improvements are not very impressive, except for the networking features. My wife currently does not have a WiFi card and has little interest in one ( yet ! ). For PPC2003 : Media Player still sucks. I have tried WinamPAQ and it works but seems flakey, I get some strange charcacters displayed randomly. I hope they release a 2003 version soon. The new picture viewer application is pretty lame compared to freeware like DAVA.
For my AXIM A5 400MHz PPC2002 I have ordered the PPC2003 upgarde CD ( really should have been on an ftp site !! ) and I am looking forward to the network features of PPC2003. I have a Netgear MA701 CF 802.11b nd a Pharos PE-CF100 NIC for conneting to RJ45. I have had problems keeping my network settings straight in different apps while using PPC2002. The new OS seems like they do a good job of keeping seperate network profiles straight. I look forward to testing it someday when Dell deceides to ship my PPC2003 cds. I'm currently running Pocket WiNc and Airscanner, a bunch of the vx applications, Netrunner, vnc, yada, yada, yada. I will download anything once, twice if I like it :) Can't wait for for someone to port Nmap to the pocket pc or *nix for the AXIM.
Please let me know what features besides the networking improvements you like that I may have overlooked. Thanks.

because so far my shipdate from dell on my 2003 mobile pocket software is a shipdate of 8/5/03. Do you think that is why this software is back ordered due to the bugs on the 2003 system??
all the dell folks of course say there has been no problems!!!

ksmack - I will try putting some MS Reader docs from my PPC2002 Axim to the PPC2003 Axim tonight. I will post here what happens. My guess is that they will be fine on PPC2003, mainly because there are so few changes/upgrades to the "Office" part of PPC2003. I saw nothing really new in Excel or Word.

ksmack- just saw your earlier post about Pocket TV.
I loaded Pocket TV on our new AXIM A5 400MHz PPC2003 and it works fine. What kind of problems have you had or did you hear about?

Dell actually did admit the problem, and they have stopped shipping all orders until they can find a fix for the 2003 problems.

SO that must be why they took it off there website also i am still waiting for it to ship, the dell folks just mention that it is in production still and that scheduled ship date is 8/5/03 but to me could they push it back. that is what i am understanding from folks that have already ordered this......that they are still waiting for it.

:) Oblox is absolutely right!!!!
I have had my Axim x5 400mhz for approximately a month now and except for a few lock ups and quirky things, it is running just fine. I have had to soft reset it several times but I haven't lost anything yet and I have everything synchronised and backedup to my PC. I must have ordered mine and recieved it about a week before the ppc2003 roll out and I have been watching the message boards concerning the problems with the new os ever since. My initial thought was that I should have waited a week to get the new os, but in light of all the "chatter" I am glad I didn't.
BTW, I ordered a refurbished unit, saved a few bucks and it looked and seems to work like new. But then I havn't seen a new one work yet.

i personally much prefer the 2003 OS, most of the fixes are the little annoying things that you can't recall until you actually run into them on the axim.
WMP9 doesn't have many more features, but i'm SOOOO glad they fixed the volume control. you know how the absolute left is 0 volume and one pixel to the right of that isn't very very low volume but low-medium volume? well now the volume scale works like it's supposed to, and it doesn't screw with the main volume control either now, they're independent.
personally i love the picture viewer, it blows away the free version of resco on the dell CD in terms of actually viewing photos. it's a lot like the winXP picture and fax viewer.
