My Axim was stolen recently and I felt so proud that I had a backup made with ActiveSynch! I ordered a new Axim, which came with MM2003, and proceeded to restore all my "stuff". WRONG! After much gnashing of teeth and hair pulling I contacted Dell only to find out that backups made with PocketPC 2002 are not compatible with MM2003. Must be another of Microsofts' "features"!!
Ahhh....so my theory was correct. Looks like everyone's gonna have to start clean slate. :)

I think he was referring to the standard ActiveSync backup....correct me if I am wrong in my assumption.

I'll admit the analogy is not quite the same.... but I wouldn't expect to be able to do a backup of a Win98 machine, install XP, then expect my Win98 backup to work
Heck, even if you don't have to start clean, I've got some odd 30+ programs installed on my SD card, and I'll bet a good number of them would have to be unstalled and versions supporting 2003 reinstalled.
I backed up using ActiveSynch. I had also backed up using the Dell Pocket PC backup utility, but of course, that was gone with the Axim. I believe the safest way to backup your data is to copy it off to a CD or Zip disk. The you don't have to worry about compatibilty issues.
But they are still two different operating systems...wouldn't a copied CD or Zip disk still not work? It seems as if it wouldn't matter if you used active sync as a back up or any other method. A backup of 2002 files seems like it wouldn't work on a 2003 system. At least that's the way it appears to me. (?)
I wouldn't know for sure, of course, because my update lingers in the 'production' stage
:)
Perhaps there is an HP owner out there who has tried to restore from a PPC2k2 backup onto a newly purchased WM2k3 device? (I'm not aware of anyone who has there upgrades available yet to use as a comparison)
Anyone?

Good to know of the incompatibility. Don't waste time re-installing your stuff however. Do the following:
1) Flash Axim to PC 2002 latest rom (A003?).
2) Restore backup.
3) Wait a few days until MM2003 upgrade flash download appears.
4) Copy/backup your stuff using anytime except Activesynch backup.
5) Flash to MM2003.
6) Restore your stuffs.
Again, your work isn't lost.

I don't think you can flash the rom that easily. Otherwise why would anyone pay 20 bucks for the upgrade cd.
I can confirm that the same was true for my friend when he flashed his IPAQ from 2002 SP2 to 2002 SP3. He couldn't use his old backup (or at least he wasn't supposed to). This doesn't surprise me too much. There is too much stuff in the backup that is OS specific I think.
I was reading the onoline axim manual that was updated for 2003... it says there is supposed to be special instructions included with the cd that shows how to bhackup/restore
