Shrink,

I've been following this whole 2003 like it has been some sort of soap opera with anger, jealousy, and unfortunately deaths. Please post back here if you resurrect you Axim.

If they want to be lemmings, let them be lemmings! If they are going to jump off a cliff for some guy LET THEM!

The lemmings have a parachute in the form of a backup of the original ROM that came on the device... returning to the original state should be as easy as simply restoring the original...

BTW: Seriously, I don't think I crossed any line with this post by pointing out the backup of their legal ROM, right? If I did, MOD please delete or tell me to edit it. Thanks.

This has been very interesting to watch and be a part of!

First, I have always loved hacking (not cracking) and those of us that have the CD on order can feel a little better about it. I've been medeling and enhancing and breaking computer stuff since my C=64!

Secondly, as I have posted on aximsite before, I'm sick of the goody-two-shoes, but I understand the sites respondibility to "keep it clean"...let's leave that to the moderators whether we agree with them or not...this site is GREAT!

Lastly, snathanb and JmE: Your information and attitudes have help make this site great! Thanks for all of your posts!

In starting this post it wasn't really my intent to spread paranoia, I was frankly only stating the simple fact that going from 2002 -> 2003 is illegal, it shouldn't be done, and at the very least should not be discussed here. People performing the upgrade illegally are abusing the system, and in the end this sort of abuse usually winds up hurting other consumers in the form of raised prices and curtailed conveniences.

This issue aside, I'd like to sort of guide this thread towards its other goal, finding out why some people are having problems with the upgrade, and looking at the different variables involved to try to find a cause.

A) Because I think those people who legitimately need this upgrade have every right to be able to put it to use ASAP

B) Because if Dell doesn't modify the installer much before the CDs are shipped to us upgrading folk, we may end up having to deal with a similar situation ourselves. So finding a solution for this now could potential save people in both camps some headaches later.

UPDATE: Given the fact that Dell just pulled the upgrade (I actually think it is because of the installer issues rather than the 2002 -> 2003 issues) the second part of this message may be moot, unless you are willing to keep flashing your Axim with a potentially flawed installer to troubleshoot it, it may be best to wait until the file is revised.

The only I find weird is that the 2002->2003 installs with less hassle than 2003->2003. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

As for people complaining about some of us installing 2003 on a 2002 device, big deal; I'm still going to get charged for the cd that I won't get until next month anyhow. I'm just too curious and I have to have the latest and greatest. This is really no different that people that apply beta SP releases to Windows 2000 or XP (and there are people that do), and that's all 2003 is really, just some tweaks and a slightly faster OS.

I figured they took it off because it didn't work right, not because 2002>2003 stuff.

I guess we'll see if the "release" update is hackable as well...

I noticed this too, but I wasn't going to be the first to point it out...

Also, I thought that those that could not use the patch (legitamate WM2003 -> WM2003) that were desparate might be inclined to flash the ROM the other way... I know I would consider it if I needed/wanted the fix for PPC2003 right away. (Point made for discussion purposes only, I am not endorsing nor encouraging putting anyone's Axim in harms way)

Some one made that point on the "other" thread, but I don't know if anyone tried it.

I too read in the other thread and someone was able to go back... It was their post that made me glad I'm still watching for the side lines. :D
