1. Failures - 12 times
2. Hangs at 1/13 always
3. 3 dots before and after
4. Axim Advanced
5. 3 systems - Toshiba 2.4G P4 Notebook, AMD 2400+ w/W2k, AMD 2700+ w/Win2003 Adv Server
6. USB 1.1 and 2.0 w/Cradle (direct and thru hubs)

Tried everything as you can see. Hard resets, batteries removal for minutes to hours, no cards, waiting at 1/13 screen overnight, etc. Even tried another "offshore" english download from the xxxxxxxxx FTP site.

No dice!

It's the Ax and I'm sick of looking at it.

Notice that the 1/13 hang is after it is disconnected from any PC anyway. Confirmed by soft-reset from ...1/13... after removing from cradle (then running on battery) - shows "updating", then ...1/13... hang.

Toshiba was XPPro. So XPPro, Win2k, and WAS2003 all failed.

Successful Upgrade!!!!!

1. Successful
2. na
3. na
4. Advanced 400Mhz model
5. Upgrade with Windows XP, 2.4 P4, 512MG DDRAM 3200, 80GB MAXTOR 7200 RPM HD IDE with Active Sync 3.7

I ensure that I restored my Dell Axim back to original state first before I did anything.

Updated smoothly no problems. Bought mine end of June 2003.

6. Used the USB Cradle with no problems even left my Simpletech Compact Flash Card 256mb in while doing so, which btw u can get one at CompUSA for $59.00, but I did a price match at Aafes (Military PX), and got it at the same price with no tax.

Upgrade is awesome, and works nice. Do not see why all these people are having problems.

Big Smile Thanks to all

Thanks to the help of this site, you are looking at one happy axim owner. Here's my info:

300 Basic shipped first week in july
WM2003
SMC EZ Connect 802.11b cf
Running Advanced XScaleCtrl

First things first: I installed the smc with the windows ce 3.0 drivers and it worked! I don't know why and I don't know how, but I was surfing the internet from my home lan on the first day.

My pda arrived with the downtrodden A04 rom. Found the update; rom flash went without a hitch, except for a freeze up between backing up of the old rom and the installation of the new rom. It did the equivalent of a hard reset and I had to restore from backup. Noticed an immediate difference in speed right off the bat. Was worried it might affect the use of my cf 802.11 card, but it still works fine.

Read the posts about how the basic's processor is no different than the advanced and downloaded Advanced XScaleCtrl. Someone had said that they got the basic up at 478; mine froze instantaneously. Backed it up to 400mhz and works like a charm. XScaleCtrl is perfect... not too much, but allows you to select LMN... mine is 27, 4, 1. I might shell out the $4 to register it but then again the pop-up reminders don't bother me.

Between the rom update and the processor boost my axim is now SCREAMING. web pages load at LEAST twice as fast as they used to and dates show up in calendar instantaneously.

I can't thank the people of this site enough! I want to share the love... if you have any more questions about my configuration, let me know...

:D
