Downgrading

Does anyone know of a way of going back to 2002 from 2003. I have a 2 day old axim as well as a 4 month old one.

And to put in bluntly i hate the new 2003 software. It has the so called new patch.

Half of my software does not work (still waiting for companys to offer updates).

So i have decided i would rather have 2002. Anyone know of a way of going back????

Find someone with a recent PPC2002 Axim who wants WM2003 on the cheap and swap?

@james: what about the update CD? I've found notices about upgrading and downgrading in the patch that was pulled (actually, the installer) so they've forseen this possibility somewhere.

@weeeeez: I don't think you're supposed to ask that here, it's pretty much the same as updating from 2k2 to 2k3 without the CD.

If you downloaded the A05 patch, the installer permits you to restore a backup, regardless of the version of the OS. You could try renaming the A03 rom with a .ris extension and see if it will restore to your axim. Otherwise you would need to edit out your device ID with a hex editor which is not recommended as going through that process could wreck your Axim.

Alternatively, call Customer support and tell them to send you a replacement without PPC2002 on it because of all the incompatibilities. They should have a new one to you in 24 hours. Good luck!

I have not seen the CD but for all we know there is a "rollback" option. I doubt it, but that would be really nice. The patch that was up on the FTP site was only for 2003 Axims so we might get an extra option when we update our 2002s. If I were you I'd call Dell and see what they say. The worst thing that can happen is that they tell you no and you are back where you are now. :shrug When I updated my wifes iPAQ from 2000 to 2002, there was no going back that I remember.

That stinks, I want to "try out" 03 and if don't want it, take it off. Maybe Dell/MS will come up with a cure.

Lets not get sad over this yet. Until we get the CD's we have no idea what the options are. Not waiting for the CD will give you a headache.

A total guess here, but I would expect the new installer to still contain the "backup ROM" option. I can't go into it here, but if the released installer did not have "backup/Restore ROM, the improper PPC2002 -> WM2003 upgrading could still have been performed. If they include the Backup/Restore function on the new installer, you could roll back if you did not like the new OS.

When someone gets their CD (like those are getting in Europe right now?) please post and let us know if it does include the option.

Not just that, what if your favorite program did not work in 2003. I'd hope they figure out a way to go back if you wanted. We'll just have to see.

James,

Apparently there are instructions on the Dell forums for going back.
