Question ROM Updates should be in .CAB format

Think about the way that ROM updates work....ActiveSync (which is not exactly a pillar of reliability) copies the files to the temp folder on the PPC, the PPC resets, the update.exe is called to hard reset the device and then apply the extracted ROM image files (13 for this particular update) and re flash the ROM. Would it not make more sense to use a .CAB file copied to the device manually which could automatically be set up to extract the files to the temp directory already on the device and then run from there. I think part of the problem is ActiveSync not copying all the files over correctly and as a result the .IMG file is not extracting the 13 updates properly.

Any thoughts?

That would certainly take at least one variable out of the loop. And as someone in another thread mentioned, how about some method of reinstalling the saved ROM if the update tanks. That saved ROM seems pretty useless.

Good idea, but I doubt we will ever see it after the hacking last week...

Ive been following the discussions for the past days about issues regarding 2002-2003 illegal updates. As i see it there are no problems continuing using updates like Dell used to do. Unless Dell have developed their own activation methods and using them on the upcomming upgrade CD, every "pirate/thief/whatever" will just get a copy of that CD instead of the A04-A05 Patch.

Just my $0.02 cents..

True but that is much harder than just downloading a copy from the FTP site.

True, it looks like a loose/loose sitiuation for Dell :-(
BTW, on the Danish part of Dell's site, the Upgrade CD is set for release 1'st or 2'nd week of august. So it can still be ordered.
